Question: What was the picture Nick shows Rachel?

"The world is not my home, I'm just a-passin' through"

reply

It's very hard to see any detail but I assumed it was a photo of his wife, which we realize later (when his mom is on the phone with Rachel), that the pic must have been a fake just to keep women at bay.

reply

In the novel it's a picture of a little boy who Rachel assumes is Nick's son, but later realizes was him as a child.

reply

Thanks on that. I assumed it was Nick as a younger man, but his point in taking it out was rather hazy.

What was the recurring theme of Rachel as a child sneaking around when a child died? Did Nick have a little brother who died? As he showed that picture to Rachel, he said he's (Nick) not God. Was it Nick's little brother who died?

reply

Yes, Nick's twin brother died when they were young.

reply

I thought it was a picture of his brother who had died, and he is trying to make her think this is his son, so she won't get any ideas of marriage.

reply

I just figured it was a picture of him when he was a boy but, yeah, his brother makes sense to me.

reply

Rachel knew that Nick had a twin brother that died. Remember the young Rachel talking to the young Nick when the hearse is there to take the twin away. What I didn't get was how the present day Nick showing the present day Rachel the picture and saying "I'm not God" is going to change her mind about wanting to be with Nick.

That was my question. I DVR'd the movie and backed it up so could see the photograph in the wallet. To me, it looked like an older man and I couldn't make heads or tails of the scene. "I'm not God", doesn't explain it to me.

reply

The picture of his younger twin is supposed to make Rachel think he has a son, and presumably a wife. When he says "I'm not God," he's telling Rachel not to put him on a pedestal as a 100% nice guy.

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!
