Question. . .confusion about ending. . .

I couldn't understand why if she wanted a change in her life she didn't go by herself (to Oregon)--she invited her mother to go with her. Did her mother end up going with her? She was sitting next to an old woman on the bus but I wasn't sure if that was her mother.

This marked the beginning of Rachel's life on her own terms. She stood up to her mother and gave her the option of going to Oregon with her, which she did.

reply

yes the woman on the bus next to rachel is her mother

"why are you married to him then if you can't work with him how do you live with him?"

reply

She is too responsible a person to just go off and leave her mother. She had to at least offer her to come along. The attraction of grandchildren got to her come., as Rachel suspected.

reply

Her mother could not live alone. So either she went with Rachel or went to live in a nursing home. In 1968 they didn't have Assisted Living places for people who are only mildly senile.

So rather than pay for that, Rachel had to have her mother with her. She knew her mom would NEVer want to stay there without Rachel.

reply

(spoilers)I don't think the woman sleeping beside Rachel on the bus was her mother. At the beginning of the scene, we see the bus pull into the stop, and it's just Rachel and Calla there waiting at the stop. No mother.

Another question: The doctor said to Rachel, 'just think of your child's college education'. (So obviously she told the doctor she was pregnant.) Then the doctor examines her, and after the exam says it a 'cyst' needed to be removed. But he didn't actually say it wasn't a pregnancy. She cries, meaning she was mistaken about her pregnancy? She seemed so certain she was pregnant when she shows up at Calla's place in the middle of the night. I didn't think a small cyst could feel like a growing baby.

reply

I have polycystic ovary syndrome, and I can tell you that a cyst large enough to require surgical removal can indeed mimic the symptoms of pregnancy. In addition to menstrual irregularity, it causes hormone fluctuations that can be almost identical to the early symptoms. And if you listen to the conversation again I think you'll find that the doctor definitely tells Rachel she is not pregnant.

reply

YES - absolutely the mother goes with Rachel to Oregon. You do see her get out of the hearse with Jonas getting their cases out, and after Calla says good-bye (the mother is probably on the bus already) you see her dozing next to Rachel as they travel out of town.
