Estelle Parsons stole the film
I thought the movie was okay overall, but it's meant to showcase Woodward's performance. In fact, it was Parsons that I thought stole every scene she was in. I felt a lot more for her than for the principle character, in particular because her loneliness and unhappiness were despite her best efforts and not just a consequence of a failure to engage with life as they were for the protagonist.
I thought she came across very likeable and sad.
