I'm surprised this is considered so good

I found almost more weird than good, perhaps good in a weird way. Certainly not bad, but it never really rose to level of a "great" movie.

Perkins' performance was outstanding, but I found Weld a little too sophisticated for an 18 year old and found it entirely unlikely she would be *allowed* to date Perkins, let alone be willing to hose him on a first date.

To each his own - but your point doesnt work about her being ALLOWED to date him - that's one of THE conflicts - the mother forbids her to date him after they officially meet and small towns are full of these live wire girls - pretty, bored and just waiting for a chance to rebel - now of course - Sue Ann's character is a trifle bit more than that - a very dangerous girl. That's what makes it so powerful.

I loved the first part; didn't like the second part. It seemed to me that when they took drugs and had sex, it changed for the worst.

I think that Sue Ann started out acting her age (which was actually 17..."almost 18") by following Dennis' lead, but then she started doing things her way, and stopped looking and acting like a high school girl of the '60s.
