Scanners(1981) Ripped Off The Power

More gore than The Power, but same basic premise. Only thing good about Scanners was Patrick McGoohan.

Loved The Power. Suzanne is very pretty, but sometimes she is too pushy in her roles, IMHO. Rest in peace, Suzanne! George Hamilton should have been a bigger star. George Pal always made interesting movies, even Conquest Of Space. Very powerful visuals and effects. He was a superb talent!

Funny you should mention that. Back in the mid to late 1980's, a local UHF station in Philadelphia would show a lot of independent and low budget films from the 1960's, 70's, and 80's. Scanners and The Power were two of those films. I saw Scanners first and loved it, then I saw The Power and came to the same conclusion... Cronenberg must have been a fan of The Power.

I know people make fun of George Hamilton's acting chops, but his performance is low key here and it matches the tone of the film perfectly.

I will need to check TCM for future broadcasts.

Boom! That is exactly what I was thinking. Pretty certain that Cronenberg saw this and took inspiration.
