Anyone notice the Grateful Dead........

..........among the hippie crowd outside Archie's apartment?! Cooooooooooooooooooooooooool!!!

Yes, VERY cool. Their performance at the Fillmore is one of my favorite parts of "Petulia." Okay, it IS my favorite part - and I really love this movie.

reply

I hear ya. My favorite part of the movie is Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company at the charity event near the beginning. I had to replay that part.

Janis is so dynamic, I recognized her right away even though she didn't have her trademark outfits on. And her singing style was more calm than some of her famous videos.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

and janis looked beautiful. as everyone did in "petulia."

reply

Yeah, you've got Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, and if you look closely, Phil Lesh is in the background when they're carrying Petulia down the stairs. Also, one of the two hippies smoking weed that Scott questions is Howard Hessman (WKRP in Cincinnatti). At least I'm 90% sure it is.

reply

Definitely Hesseman (he's even noted in the cast on IMDB). I'm pretty sure he (Howard Hesseman) and Janis Joplin were friends in real life.

I can resist anything but temptation.

The Dead scenes remind me a lot of the Yardbirds in "Blow up" by Antonioni, and I would even guess that it is a little bit borrowed from that movie.

reply

I had a "Blow-Up" vibe as well with the scenes of the Dead and Big Brother. Regardless, both films capture the free-wheeling era quite well, and they recognized how vital the music was to the scene.

And I believe that's Danny Rifkin, one of the Dead's original managers, next to Phil.

reply

Yeah!

That was cool and it was during a time when the Grateful Dead were just becoming a national name.
