Why was the Coke changed to Pepsi?
In the play, Oscar says "My friend Murray gets a warm Coke", in the movie he says "My friend Murray gets a warm Pepsi". Why'd they change it?

shareMaybe Coke wouldn't allow the filmmakers to use their name for the movie.
shareCoca-Cola took over Columbia Pictures for five years in early Eighties but even decades before, seemed to be some sort of relationship between the two companies. If you look at very many Columbia pictures of late Forties-early Sixties, Coca-Cola just turns up in too many scenes to be sheer coincidence.
Odd Couple was a Paramount release; could be that studio wasn't about to plug a cola that possibly had product placement deal with rival movie company. Just a guess--but it's hard to believe Coke refused to let Paramount use the name. Why turn down a free plug?
I think i'll have meatloaf and a pepsi tonight!

Point in fact when Joan Crawford made two William Casle films for Columbia Pictures (she was a big shot in the Pepsi Cola co) one saw bottles in both films
matter of fact the doctor in Strait-Jacket was not a actor

My wife use to know a lady who worked with Joan at Pepsi, she said that Joan was a real pain and that's the nice story.

Well everybody knows that, everybody knows Joan was a genuine bitch.
shareWell I've heard stories that say different as well.
When I went to JENNIFER to buy a sofa here in Brooklyn NY the store had a lot of old showbiz photos (some great photos BTW) among them were some shots of Joan the salesman who placed them there, parent used to work in Wardrobe at I think Warner Bros.
The parent said she was the nicest person and on one of the short bios on TCM the actor said the same thing.
Now as I listed before my wife used to know a former Pepsi office worker who also said Joan was a bitch.

Of course she'd act nice in public, where all her fans are...you think she'd have any fans if she treated everybody like the people who knew her best?
shareHead of wardrobe is not the public, neither are co-stars

The other posts about Coke and Columbia are probably as good a reason as any, but remember, companies paying for "product placement" is not new. Pepsi probably paid for the plug.
