This film was based on a book by Ronald Bassett. It was only given the title "Conqueror Worm" to cash in on the success of the American International Pictures based on Poe - House of Usher, Pit and the Pendulum etc...

AIP did put a voice-over of Vincent Price reading a Poe poem called The Conqueror Worm over the end credits of the American cut but that's the only (tenuous) link to Poe.

Glad to hear you liked the movie - it's one of my favs!

This brings back a very old memory.

I first saw this film as a child. It was titled with the Poe reference, i.e., THE CONQUORER WORM. I had never known that others know the film by another name.

Back then, I thought I was going to see a Vincent Price science fiction movie akin to "The Cockroach That Ate Cincinnatti" but with a worm instead of a cockroach. Boy, was I surprised! I never did see any worms! Man! I was so confused!

I remember seeing this movie in the theater in 1968 in California the day it came out. I remember reading the reviews -- all good reviews. Like withmastergeneral states, it was well known that the title was just tacked on because Vincent Price had starred in a string of Edgar Allen Poe cheapies for American International.

I remember this film vividly. It was very well done, seemingly historically accurate, and suspensful. Of course had nothing to do with Poe.

I saw it again last night on TCM, and it has the same impact as when I saw it in the theater 38 years ago.
