Who would play the leads now???

King Henry - Sir Anthony Hopkins; Sir Ben Kingsley; Brian Cox

Eleanor - Dames Judi Dench or Maggie Smith;

Richard - Henry Cavill; Jonathan Rhys Meyers; Michael Fassbender; Colin Farrell.

Geoffrey - Chace Crawford, Sean Faris, Chris Pine, Oliver Coleman,Channing Tatum, Dan Stevens.

John - Jamie Bell; Jeremy Irvine.

Phillip - Alex Wyndham ; Daniel Bruehl; Andrew Garsfield ; Jeremie Elkaim.

There MUST be others equally as suitable - others want to put forth suggestions?
Having stated above, wouldn't want to see a remake just yet. This is a classic.

reply

They already did a remake in 2003. Patrick Stewart was Henry, Glenn Close was Eleanor.

Interestingly, Jonathan Rhys Meyers WAS in the remake as Philip.

Thank you for not suggesting George Clooney...that's getting to be a pet peeve of mine.

Personally, I'm very satisfied with the original.

"I could peel you like a pear and God himself would call it justice!"

reply

They also did a stage version in New York a few years back - Laurence Fishburne as Henry and Stockard Channing as Eleanor.

reply

I'd love to see Judi Dench in this role; she could make it her own and pull it off. I can't think of anyone who'd equal Peter O'Toole's performance, however.

The remake was a big disappointment to me, even though some quality people were involved.

reply

Glad you agree Dame Judi.
Haven't seen the remake and from other reports, not in a hurry to see it either.

reply

Agreed, no remake needed, but . . .

For Henry the same actor keeps popping into my brain - Russell Crowe. You might think he's too young but he's currently 48 years old. Henry is 50 but still a vigorous, powerful man. I think Crowe would be ideal.

Elinor is more difficult to cast. She is 61 but was once a beauty. Sorry but that rules out Maggie Smith and Judy Dench. Helen Mirren would be a wonderful choice. Maybe even Meryl Streep.

Surprised no one has mentioned Tom Hardy - perfect choice to play Richard.

Maybe a remake isn't such a bad idea?

"Push the button, Max!"

reply

Sign me up for Brian Cox as Henry(though your other two choices are great) and Fassbender as Richard

reply

Agree Brian Cox ; Fassbender as Richard a good possibility. Henry Cavill maybe?

reply

Sorry for the late reply, but I think Henry Cavill (had to look him up and I hope he nails Superman) would be a great Philip IMO, though he wouldn't be a bad Richard.

reply

For myself DDL and Oldman are obvious choices to play Henry, I don't know about Eleanor?

reply

Crowe would be good I'm sure as well and for the person who was happy George Clooney wasn't mentioned I think this would actually be a part where we could actually see what George is made of... Most of his roles seem to work on the same note; he's played different characters sure but I think this part would suit him, challenge him to say the least.

reply

I hope there is no remake and certainty not with that clooney clown. He has already ruined enough movies.

reply

How about Fassbender as Geoffrey?

Yes, Tom Hardy an interesting choice for Richard.

reply

Daniel Day-Lewis as Henry, Helen Mirren as Eleanor, Henry Cavill as Richard, Andrew Garfield as Geoffrey, Mia Wasikowska as Alais, Jaimie Campbell Bower as Philip.

Yeah, they're dead; they're--all messed up!

reply

Gary Oldman - King Henry
Meryl Streep - Eleanor

Leonardo DiCaprio - Richard
Joseph Gordo-Levitt - Geoffrey
Daniel Radcliffe - John

Michael Fassbender - Phillip
Mia Wasikowska - Alice

reply

Agree most of your choices above.
Don't know Wasikowska at all.
Don't envisage Oldman as Henry ; Radcliffe a good choice as Prince John.
