But all that comic book movie schlock is? Don't get me wrong I like comic book characters but none of the movies compare to the art displayed in this film. Ah, IMDB. Their slogan should be "Where moron's opinions are just as valid" .
Well, here is one poster who will not disagree with you.
Sadly, mainly the under 30/35's demand constant action, lots cgi, and everything, but everything spelt out for them. Don't ask them to actually think through a plot, and use grey cells!! Talk about pandering to the LCD! lol!
Look at great films like this, with such outstanding acting and scripts, and what we have dished up now pales in shallow comparison.
However, to use your noun, it keeps the morons happy, and the studios get their dollars.
That's why independent films is where the art is. If you are looking for true art in the writing and acting form then independent films harbor much more talent that the blockbuster studios.
Largely in agreement. I have watched some really good little indie films (many are sub-titled)and would not have missed them. How sad that so many people will not go see anything subtitled. If you haven't seen 'Downfall' I urge you to do so - outstanding direction and acting, and IMO, one of the best films on WWII ever made. Definitely in the top three or so. Michael Mann has been earmarked to make a film of Agincourt,(based on Cornwell's book) which has the makings of a great epic, IF the script even comes close to LiW, and top A-list actors are chosen, as were used in this outstanding film of its day. I am apprehensive lest the usual Hollywood pretty boys are picked for the lead roles, who would ruin it. Way too many actors nowadays seem to equate physical perfection with talent ; sometimes they have it of course, but more than usually not. I hope I am not so pessimistic that films such as this one, will not be replicated in the years ahead. This should be the template.

OMG! Downfall is epic! I have that film! Excellent movie and it would definitely lost it's edge if it was filmed in English. The film felt like you were a fly on the wall in the bunker to witness Hitler's final moments. Wonderful film. Excellent choice.
For a while I only strictly watched indie films because the Hollywood schlock was just so boring. But then IFC went to commercials and I quit watching it and I canceled Netflix so it is hard to come by some good indie films. I really need to get back into it. I have been slacking on my film hobby lately.
I would recommend also 'Napola' another German-made film set in WWII. I believe it carries a different title in English? (Not as good as Downfall, but that is in a class of its own ; you were right,I too felt I was there, and even knowing the outcome, found it gripping). Another better than good war movie is 'The Brotherhood of War', set in Korea, and subtitled, but great viewing, and very realistic war scenes. (Think Saving Private Ryan battle scenes).
Maybe try 'Un Jour d'Ete', a good French indie film. Not Oscar worthy, but shows what can be done even on a small budget, believe me. (Add in some good shots of rural France!)
If you are keen on Samurai tales, I'd recommend 'Gohatto'.
Good viewing, and if you catch any of my suggestions of indie film well worth an hour or two or three of your time, would appreciate your opinion at some point down the line.
I will check them out. I do like Samurai films and Japanese films in general. Of course Kurosawa is a good start if you wish to indulge in great Japanese film making. If you want to check out some Korean flicks Chan Wook-Park is a good choice. Check out his revenge trilogy. Excellent set of films. Coming from the United States I am often intrigued with foreign films because they are not restrained with the Puritanical influence we have here which cripples a lot of the art.
The Lion in Winter has an 8.2 rating, which would put it in there (8.2 rated movies are about nos. 110-155). Probably there are not enough reviewers for it to qualify.
However, The Lion King is No. 57. That should tell you what the ridiculous Top 250 is worth. It doesn't matter to me what film makes it and which doesn't.

Ha! The Lion King. Never watched it but I know it is a children's animated film which just backs up my original statement about IMDB's top 250 being fueled by moron's votes.
You have to keep in mind that the ratings on IMDB are based on IMDB members which may be of age from 6 to 96. The age of the raters are stated on the ratings page of each movie but I don't know if the overall ratings have the same listing or not.
Rotten Tomatoes and some of the other movie sites cater to different age and educational level groups so the ratings over all the Net are all over the place.
************************************* My favorite: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

True, but Churchill was entirely correct in his paradoxical aphorism: "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." Every other form IS worse. The problem with democracy is not that everyone is idiots, but that there is no way to control things. That is both good and bad. It requires a great deal of confidence in your fellow man AND alot of hard work to keep it functioning. The idea that we can have a functioning democracy on the cheap is not just foolish, but extremely dangerous.
