this should have been the one film that earned O'Toole an Oscar
Alas, while his female co-star was honoured, O'Toole was snubbed. Disgraceful.

shareYes, was far better in this film than as Lawrence ; he brought King Henry to life and ideally cast. I thought he was miscast as Lawrence, btw.
shareI agree wholeheartedly with the OP.
Upon hearing of O'Toole's passing, I immediately knew what I would do at home that evening - pop in "The Lion and Winter" and watch his magnificent performance. And it was, once again, MAGNIFICENT!!!!
I did the same.

He should have won for Beckett & Venus too.
shareThe OP is correct
This is his best performance
Lawrence was good, Becket was Good,
But The Lion defined Peter O'Toole
When some ones says peter O'Toole, I don't see Lawrence, or Henry from Becket, I see The Lion
In a world where a carpenter can be resurrected, anything is possible.
Agreed!
sharePeter O'Toole had a lot of bad luck in his many nominations, up against either overdue veterans giving good performances or actors giving the performances of their catreers. (Perfect example, when he lost for The Stunt Man to Robert DiNiro for Raging Bull, and the other losers were John Hurt, Jack Lemmon and Robert Duvall.)
But to me there is no doubt in the case of The Lion in Winter that O'Toole is the clear cut winner. Charlie is a good movie, but not great. Also people forget that Robertson ran a huge media campaign calling attention to his performance. This is the one time I can say that O'Toole was truly robbed.
It is not our abilities that show who we truly are...it is our choices
