Is Fox Television Series "Empire" Based On This?

Or King Lear... I heard that it was, but I never seen the movie.

Neither. The legend of King Lear is referred to in TLIW, but only in passing.

All stories of family infighting over the family property or business necessarily have resemblances, but that doesn't mean they are based on each other.

The in-fighting over years within Henry II's family is well documented. This play condenses the reasons for it etc., into one Christmas period. Henry belikens himself to King Lear, but the play is by no means based on King Lear.
