How did Peter O'Toole not win the Oscar?

How did Peter O'Toole not win the Oscar?

This is one of the greatest performances I have ever seen on film. Outstanding! One man who was robbed numerous times for this coveted award.

Because he was up against Cliff Robertson who was playing a "mental".

100x this.

I think it was because he was up against such stiff competition from his co-stars. Everyone in the film was excellent, including Hepburn and the son's and (squeeze!) Timothy Dalton.

I think Hepburn got the nomination and he didn't because, well, she was Hepburn at her most diva-ish! She wasn't an actress, she was a Movie Star!

Cliff Robertson ran a pretty full-on campaign by all accounts, which clinched it for him. I am fairly sure that, on his third nomination and in a widely-popular film, O'Toole was the favourite to win that year. For the record - of the three I've seen - I'd pick Alan Arkin for The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, but O'Toole would have been a great choice too.

I haven't seen Charly but the clips I have seen, and the reviews I have read, have never made me keen to sit through it. I have never been all that impressed with Robertson - not a bad actor, but generally a rather bland second or third lead.

The best performers that year were O’Toole & Ron Moody in “Oliver!” They may have split the vote. Also, the American would have had an advantage over British nominees.
