Improper Term?

Just finished watching ISZ this afternoon on TCM. Towards the end of the movie the captain of the submarine(Rock Hudson)refers to the sub twice as a "ship."I always thought that the correct Naval term was boat.Great movie favorite of mine.

A ship is a large sea vessel. A boat is something you go fishing in.
Unless you're thinking about Das Boot (the boat). Even Zepplins are air ships.

reply

A boat is something you can buy. A ship is something only large corporations and governments can buy.

reply

The correct way to refer to a submarine in the USNavy, is 'boat'.

reply

In the Navy the term "ship" refers to any vessel above the water. The term "boat" refers to submarines.

reply

In the Royal Navy, which has lent many traditions to it's US counterpart, a ship is any vessel which can carry a boat. As submarines tend not to carry boats as a matter of course, they are boats. Cdr. Ferraday would never have referred to his boat as a ship.

reply

Not just that, US submarines are built by General Dynamics Electric Boat Division.

ALL qualified submariners refer to their ships as boats.

Period.

While technically all modern warship-sized submarines are in fact ships, based on size alone, they are 100% unequivocally referred to as "boats" by their crews. Without exception.

Yes, they are more than 7500 tons submerged displacement, and cost about $2B each.

This is from a career submarine sailor.
