Unfortunate casting

Gregory Peck as the captain of the sub would rate another full star without anything else changing. Borgnine just can't fill up the screen. Jim Brown is an *beep* for no reason - oh yeah, he's really an *beep* in real life. Only McGoohan can get anywhere with this material. Still, fun to watch and a nice score.

McGoohan was quality in everything he did. I never rated Peck so for me Hudson was ok. The problem with Borgnine is I guessed he was the bad guy too early on. He came across as too obvious. Maybe Brown should have been the bad guy?

...now I do it just to watch their f----n' expression change.

Totally agree, only McGoohan came across as genuine.

Gregory Peck could've banged his fist down on that table just as thunderously as McGoohan, but that's about the only scene where I was thinking Hudson came up lacking. Although Peck was a more impressive dramatic presence on screen, Hudson infused his performance with a subtle humour in a way that I think Peck probably couldn't have pulled off as well (Other than "Roman Holiday", I can't think of too many comedies where G.P was particularly successful at being funny).

Thank goodness that David Niven did not play Jones though. I cannot imagine how skinny little he could have come across as cool and as dangerous as Magoohan, who I felt deserved a best supporting oscar nomination for his performance.

I thought Ernest Borgnine was very good as Vaslov, but I can certainly see Tony Quinn doing an equally fine job.

The only role I absolutely wish had been recast was Lt. Walker. Tony Bill is most unlikely looking to be a marine unit commander. The guy could pass for 19, and talk about a pencil neck. Even his voice is very juvenile-sounding, and just a very poor choice.

Agree about McGoohan and Peck. Don't agree with your other points, especially the score.

Agree with the comments about McGoohan, he was always class and IMO appeared too infrequently on the big screen. But Rock was good in this film and I can understand why he claimed it to be his favourite role.🐭

He had a rule that he would not kiss a woman on screen as it felt like cheating on his wife.

So that ruled out romantic parts which only left villainous parts and you do not want to be doing that all the time.

It's that man again!!
