Marooned
I've just had a thought - how did Kuroda come to be on the island? I had assumed that he swam ashore from a shipwreck. But with his cap on his head and his field-glasses round his neck? Seems unlikely. Was he perhaps deliberately marooned, like Ben Gunn?
I know, I know, the film is not to be taken too literally. But I just thought it was an amusing question.
Here's another one. Kuroda is a very competent maroon. Consider - he makes a water catchment, fish traps, a burglar alarm, a bonfire, a fishing rod and hooks, a wooden sword, a bamboo spear, a rake, a Zen garden, a whetstone, a flute, a raft. Poor old Marvin's character can't do a thing - he can't cook, even with an instruction manual, he can't catch fish or find water. Without Kuroda there, how long would he have lasted?
