Crappest ending ever
What happened? Did they run out of money? One minute they're arguing then suddenly there's this crappy building model which goes bang. Then The End shows up.

According to the trivia, the studio didn't like the original ending (anyone know what it was??) and added a scene from another film showing the explosion.
Before I read that, I thought that it was some kind of anti-war message about how two people from opposing sides can be brought together and get along, and then so easily be pushed apart again, and that no matter what happens, war and destruction ultimately wrecks any progress between them.
In particular, it was the movie's producer, Henry G. Saperstein that did not like John Boorman's original ending (the two arguing then going their separate ways). He thought it was not strong enough and felt that perhaps it was best the two perish when their compound gets bombed. Of course, with the DVD, one can now view both endings and pick which one they prefer.
