Powerful message given

The movie has, in my opinion, a powerful message related to war and human
behavior. Each man acts as a symbolism of how nations behave---the island
is isolated forcing the men to resolve differences, just as nations are forced
to discover a way to live on this (isolated) planet. Various schemes of give and take, generosity and privation, disrespect and mutual respect are displayed during the pre-sailing portion of the movie. Co-operation (somewhat grudgingly) yields to "deliverance" or temporary peace where health, hygiene, literature and enjoying life is found (theyland, wash, shave, eat, drink, smoke, read). But old antagonisms resurface quickly when memories (suspicions) return. The ending shows that mankind "blows up" each other without resolving how to live with one another. Guilt is shared by both groups.
It is a definite anti-war film and remarkable well done.

The ending marked their return to their own realities.
They lived together and learned to respect one another. And communicate with one another. But when reality came, they accepted it and turned against one another.

I like your interpretation. It's spot on!
