A great yet little known film

I saw this film when it first came out. I was 12 and was totally moved by the amazing performances of the cast especially: Sondra Locke in a terrific debut performance, Chuck McCann, famous locally in the NYC area to all kids as for his terrific comedic skills as a host of 2 WPIX children shows and of course Alan Arkin, who at the time was very popular and well-respected for the breadth and diverisity of each role he would take on. But this is his absolute best. The film was very well received, but like Arkin's rep, their popularity faded over time. It's been great to see more of Mr. Arkin over the years. But his talents have never been used as well as they were during the mid and late 1960's. This is a man that is as good as any actor that has ever been on film.

My fave of 1968. Arkin & McCann should have won Oscars and Locke deserved her nomination. Wonderful book & film.

When I was a young teen in the early '70s, this film still had an outstanding reputation. Then Alan Arkin's career ran out of gas and Sandra Locke never established herself, until she became a kind of kitsch cultural totem in the Clint Eastwood films before Clint was finally heralded as a great legend in the second Reagan Administation. Stacy Keach's promise to become a major movie actor blew out in the early '70s, too, after FAT CITY. That might have put the damper on its reputation.
