What else could we expect from a film codirected by John Wayne, starring John Wayne? Has all the nuance and sophistication of Big Jim McLain and all the authenticity of The Conqueror.

reply

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure that Jim Hutton is wonderful in this movie.

He and John Wayne did the movie "Hellfighters" together, too. Both were great in it, and Jim looked EXTREMELY hot! Hotter than fire, in fact.

Jim Hutton: talented gorgeous hot hunk; adorable as ElleryQueen; SEXIEST ACTOR EVER

I don't think a real fan would have the courage to mention those two hilarious bombs.

reply

"The Green Berets" was hardly an hilarious bomb. The move grossed over $25 million which back then, was an awful lot of money!

"Why Don't We Do It In The Road"?

reply

They meant an artistic bomb, not a financial one. And it is.

reply

Well, boo-hoo.

reply

Aw, it'll be okay. Sometimes John Wayne made bad movies and that's just the way it was. In the end he was just a man.

P.S. Don't see The Conqueror.

reply

And Lassie was just a doggie.

reply

In the sense that Lassie didn't have a superhuman (supercanine?) ability to avoid starring in lousy movies, yes, Lassie was just a doggie.

reply

You appear to have a superhuman ability to ignore the better parts of John Wayne's filmography.

reply

I'm not sure how you got that impression, since I said he sometimes made bad movies.

reply

And I said that you appear to have a superhuman ability to ignore the better parts of John Wayne's filmography.

Thanks, but there's been no trouble on this end interpreting your words. It's what made it appear so to you that's a mystery. I'm pointing out the word "sometimes" because it's a word that excludes the possibility of "all the time." You say "you appear to have a superhuman ability to ignore the better parts of John Wayne's filmography," but saying he "sometimes" made bad movies is itself an acknowledgement that there are better parts. See what I mean? No idea why you're getting the impression I said he made nothing but lousy ones. Feel free to explain one of these days.

reply

Yes, brilliant. Your fascinating reply was worth waiting for!

John Wayne was not the type to be 'Artistic'.
He was the type to tell a story and let the audience enjoy the show. In the traditions of thousands of Hollywood movies characters were kept to a minimum so the audience wouldn't get confused. Stereotypes were and are used in films to avoid having to give long backstories on minor characters. Remember, this was an action film, not an existential journey into the minds and souls of men separated from their familys serving the cause of international justice.
