Are there any other Hammer movies as good as this?

This get's 7.3 on IMDB and I was wondering if there are any other Hammer films held in such high regard? I think that Dracula, Prince of Darkness is also good, but are there any other Hammer films that could be recommended "must see's"? Are there any I should avoid? basically I'm a starter when it comes to Hammer so any info would be appreciated.

I am also contemplating buying the Ultimate Hammer Collection DVD Boxset containing 21 films - But it is quite expensive.

queb when I was young we ran a theatre in the 50s and 60s when these most of these movies came out and I saw a lot of them. This one and some of the ones you mentioned were great but I feel they were all good movies and worth watching. In fact I don't remember them ever making a bad movie.

The Great Hammer Horror films are as follows.

Dracula, Brides of Dracula, Dracula-Prince of Darkness.
All Frankenstein films except "Evil of...and Horror of...."

Hound of the Baskervilles, The Mummy, The Gorgon,Plague of the Zombies,The Reptile.

(some of the later Draculas are okish such as: Taste the blood of D,: D has risen from the Grave : Scars of D..all have their moments but are beginning to smell of dead horses being flogged.)

Dracula A.D.'72 and Satanic rites of Dracula benefit from having Cushing as Van Helsing but moving Dracula to the modern age dealing with hippies and motorcycle gangs just doesn't work.

Any way the first few I mentioned are the best..there are others that are good but tread carefully Hammer's quality control went haywire sometime around 1964.

I hope the link below works. It lists all of the Hammer films. They were good movies but they weren't always horror movies. One was the Devil's Ship Pirates with Christopher Lee who is the captain of a ship stranded after the battle of the Spanish Armada but in reality he is really the captain of pirates posing as Spanish sailors. Also another one was about WW2 British POWs held by the Japanese called The Secret of Blood Island.

Thanks for all the advice and the link...I have just finished watching Quatermass and the Pit and I enjoyed every second of it! I'm due to watch Bette Davis in The Nanny next week. Any other 'cream of the crop' Hammer film recomendations would be appreciated.

Another Hammer film that is not as well known but very good and worth watching is Ten Seconds to Hell with Jack Palance and Jeff Chandler. This is a very good movie. It is not a horror movie but it is about Germans after WW2 who defuse bombs dropped by the Allies that didn't explode. A good movie and worth watching out for. I didn't realize till recently that Hammer Films had made this movie.

All the Quatermass films are worth seeing - Quatermass Xperiment, Quatermass II.
Check out Curse of the Werewolf and Brides of Dracula - two of the very best most readily available on Universal's Hammer Franchise Collection (some people have reported technical glitches with this set, but I've had no problem).
Cash on Demand is another top flight title, not horror, which is due a UK release later this year.
Happy viewing.

i would seriously recommend satanic rites of dracula if you liked the devil rides out.

its more devil worship in posh country houses type stuff, but a lot of the action is set in 70s london too.

and it isnt all hippies and groovy dracula type stuff like a lot of people say, its quite gritty stuff, very nicely directed. no hippies or 70s pop culture references (apart from a mini cooper) whatsoever

If you like comedy "Hammer comedy presentations" made some film versions of British t.v shows in the 1970's, such as

Man About The House-The Movie
On The Buses-Mutiny On The Buses-Holiday On The Buses

IMO, the Evil of Frankenstein is one of the better films produced by Hammer.

For something of the beat and path, check out Doctor Who and the Daleks with Peter Cushing.

vampire circus and Captain Kronos are both worth seeing as they play around with the whole Vampire mythology a bit.

"Lost Continent" is a strange movie - look it up in imdb. I can't help feeling that it might have been a bit of an influence on the Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3 movies. I'd love to see it again

Not a Hammer film but from the same era, Dr Terror's House of Horrors (1964) is well worth checking out. A bunch of strangers encounter a weird old man (Peter Cushing) on a train, and he produces a Tarot deck and proceeds to tell their fortunes - each "fortune" comprising a segment of the film. Chris Lee also stars of course, and Donald Sutherland also features.

To throw my two cents in, I would say the aforementioned Quatermass films and Captain Kronos, and the surprisngly unmentioned Curse of the Werewolf. Captain Kronos is my favorite Hammer, just the right mix of action, comedy, and horror.

Bottom of barrel Dracula.....

Another great one is the Witchfinder General about witch hunting in 17th century England.

reply

Hell yeah witchfinder general! Also want to recommend Taste the Blood of Dracula, while offering my opinion that Satanic Rites sucks. Further wish to disagree with an earlier post steering the OP away from Horror of Frankenstein, which I think is great.

Bottom line: tastes vary, but Hammer Studios is still a stamp of quality.

Witchfinder General is in no way a Hammer film, but it is awesome.

Dracula: Prince of Darkness is one of my favorites. The cinematography, music and atmosphere make it a classic. I also recommend Horror of Dracula, The Reptile, Plague of the Zombies and the Quatermass films. There are also some other great non-hammer films worth watching too like Horror Express, Dr Terror's House of Horrors and Torture Garden.

Taste Of Fear with Christopher Lee was a pretty good film. A wheelchair bound heiress arrives at Cote D Azur with her estranged father. Her stepmother says her father has left on business. That night the girl visits the summer house where she sees her father corpse propped up in a chair. Further disturbing incidents also happen to her. A local doctor Christopher Lee says he thinks she is going insane. She confides in the chauffeur that she thinks they are trying to have her certified for her inheritance. It says on my dvd cover Christopher Lee said its the best hammer film i ever made!

Here is a list of my top ten Hammer films, listed in chronological order:

1) 'The Quatermass Experiment' (1955).
2) 'The Curse of Frankenstein' (1957).
3) 'Horror of Dracula' (1958).
4) 'Hound of the Baskervilles' (1959).
5) 'The Brides of Dracula' (1960).
6) 'The Curse of the Werewolf' (1961).
7) 'The Gorgon' (1964).
8) 'Plague of the Zombies' (1966)
9) 'Quatermass and the Pit' (1967).
10) 'Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde' (1971).

As far as ones to avoid are concerned, I would nominate 'Scars of Dracula' and 'Horror of Frankenstein', both 1970.

Along with Witchfinder General, another Hammeresque film by Tigon worth watching is Blood on Satan's Claw.
