Reaction to the book
I haven't seen the movie, and won't attempt to offer any opinions about it.
But I have read the book, and I'm curious about what other people think about it.
Here's my take. (SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!) I didn't care for it. I'd heard and read all the praise, with some people claiming it's one of the funniest books ever written. I read it and never cracked a smile. Admittedly, it's more than 40 years old, and the things that seem daring and bold back then often seem tame today. But "daring" aside, I never found it funny. We can debate this, but that's my gut reaction. If you find it funny, more power to you. Maybe the pace of humor is just faster today, but I never found myself amused. Evidently, I'm not familiar enough with whatever Southern and Hoffenberg were satirizing.
On top of that, I found it to be poorly constructed. I can tolerate the lack of a strong plot. For the most part, it's just Candy being seduced by the various men she meets. But it takes a bizarre turn in the last third of the novel, and just makes no sense at all.
And the famous "meeting" with her father in the last scene is completely out of the blue. It's a coincidence so preposterous, it just left me scratching my head.
I just don't see what all the fuss is about.
