DIFFERENCE in the 68 version vs the re-release 1977 / VHS, DVD, Blu-ray

It's a shame that BARBARELLA was altered from it's original 1968 release but it was. The opening titles are different and were tamed down for the 1977 re-release version. Unfortunately, this is the version that exists today in all formats. VHS, DVD and Blu-ray.

The original "floating titles" show more of a bare Fonda. The title for DAVID HEMMINGS for example. The letters in the re-re-lease newly titled "BARBARELLA QUEEN OF THE GALAXY where bumped up and burned brighter so that Fonda's vagina would not be visible which is was in the 68 version. Also, the floating letters in the 1968 version hit, bounce off and break off of Fonda's nipples into dozens of pieces. This was completely altered and changed for re-release version.

I have a 1968 version of Barbarella on 16mm film/2 reels that I always wanted to get a digital copy of.
I have never watched my film, but it is a Cinemascope 2:35 ratio and is not the 1977 version.
If I ever get this done I will post it here and try to get you a copy of the Blu-ray disc I get it burned on.

do you have it on blu ray yet? I will pay you good money for this.

So we missed out on nipple-breaking letters and more Jane Fonda vagina?
Wow that IS a shame.
Would have changed the entire film...

reply

Not changed the movie Hailey.. But retained the film as it was originally made.. Films should not be changed or edited permanently, just as books should never be changed or edited in a permanent fashion.

Thankfully we don't yet live in the world of Fahrenheit 451 or occupied Belgium in WW2.

if the original version from 1968 is different than all the version available on video then how do you know this? it's been 48 years since it first came out. there's no way you remember everything about this movie back when it first came out. also there is no way that in 1968 a woman in a major movie released wide in theaters had a vagina in it.

It would be pubes, not a vagina! There was nudity in the early 60s.

The version now on video in Australia is of the Laser Disc version which has a more "nude" opening credit scene. The difference in the credits occurs when 'David Hemmings' credit appears, from then on the floating titles reveal more of Jane Fonda than the original version and video did.
