another idiotic move in a western *spoiler*

It always annoys me when people do bone-headed things in westerns simply because they need to make it more 'dramatic' and the writers and/or director ignore basic logic:

During the big gunfight with the bandoleros, Raquel Welch is being raped and Dean Martin pulls the man off her by the head...yet doesn't blow his brains out. I don't think this is a matter of any sort of implied sporting chance/good character, because in the old west, I think it'd be acceptable in the heat of battle to shoot someone point blank in the head when they're raping a woman. Instead, in a fit of macho idiocy, he decides it'd be best to get into a fistfight -- which might very well endanger his and/or Raquel's lives and let the rapist/gang leader get away. Then the fight proceeds outside, into a storm of gunfire, where Dean's character deservedly gets stabbed to death for his efforts. I say 'deservedly', because any movie character acting so stupidly deserves to get killed off. His character might even be dumb enough to qualify for a 'Darwin Award'.

Well if you want to talk bonehead moves, when Mace first saves Dee and the gang, they put all the guns in a horse cart out of town, which the townsfolk quickly recover, thereby arming themselves. Dee makes a big show of locking up Sheriff July in the pokey and hiding the keys in the stove. He neglects to lock the outside door of the jail, and while he does take one of the gunbelts from the sheriff's office, he leaves at least 2 more, giving the deputy the chance to shoot the lock off the jail cell and quickly free the sheriff. With a little more forethought, he would have put the deputy in the lock up as well, locked both doors, been careful to take all the guns from the office and had one of the gang drive the horse cart full of guns along for the ride -- at the very least, they could sell them and make some cash.

Yes, that final gunfight was a big mess with people acting like morons, just to increase the body count.

Dee Bishop should have just shot the bandit chief. But I guess seeing him on top of the woman he loved just made him go crazy... and stupid. That's testosterone for you 

Also, when will cowboys learn that you don't leave cover when bullets are whizzing around your ears? Most of the non-bandoleros who got shot, did so because they just had to run out among the people who were shooting at them. The surviving men were the ones who wisely stayed in the cantina.

I watched Comancheros the other day, and the moment I saw some idiot perch himself on top of a stack of grain sacks (instead of hiding behind them!) to get a better shot at the baddies, I just knew he was a goner.

Must be all that whisky and the STDs rotting their brains 
