Mitchum's revolver is a faked single action Colt. A more modern swing out cylinder model made to look like a Colt. This happened all the time in Hollywood westerns.

Etc., etc., etc., etc. There's an expert on something who can pick apart every little detail in a period movie. Producers could blow most of their budget and time trying to get it all perfect, but they realize what's important is the story and characters. Those who can't handle the compromise go into producing documentaries.
