Remake Ideas: A Hybrid of 2001, 2010, Kubrick, and Clarke

For anyone foolish enough to remake 2001...some suggestions:

1) re-title the movie "The Sentinel", which was the title of an early Clarke short story which was the basis for the Kubrick/Clarke 2001 screenplay.

2) once the title is changed, the film can be set at an indeterminate point in the future

3) incorporate material from both the books 2001, 2010 & maybe 2061 by Clarke...but only materials from the books, not the movies.

4) skip over the "Dawn of Man" and "Clavius" sequences, which allows us to:

5) jump right into the Jupiter mission from the point in Clarke's 2001 novelization

6) make the ultimate target planet Saturn, just as in Clarke's novel, with the audience learning of the monolith and the ultimate mission the same time Bowman does

7) make the monoliths translucent rectangles, just as in Clarke's novel

8) make the Leonov rescue misson a multi-national expedition (American, Russian, Chinese, British, French, Brazilian, Japanese, and Indian crew-members). In fact, since it's no longer a Russian ship, might as well change the name while we're at it.

9) use the spare, other-wordly music of John Cage (especially Cage's music for prepared piano & vocal music), with absolutely no music re-use of music from Kubrick's or Hyams' films

10) incorporate the newest technology and newest ideas that NASA and other space agencies may have today.

11) don't have an parts of the film take place on earth, keep it in space please

12) the Jupiter and Saturn flybys should be a major part of the film visually, and should be used to give the film a chance to "breathe". Clarke's description of the sun hitting the rings of Saturn is one of the most poetic parts of his book 2001, and was never seen in either of the films, obviously, since they never made it to Saturn.

...and good luck with that [laugh]
