NBC's digital channel CoziTV (WNBCDT2) may be starting to run "The Name of the Game." The season one episode "Swingers Only" is scheduled for telecast early Friday, August 2, 2013 at 3:00 AM Eastern Time. Visit cozitv-dot-com to get information about accessing this channel.
I'm not based in the US, so I can't see this, but it would be great if the show as back in syndication.
First, it might mean that it gets picked up by an UK channel.
Second, someone might record the episodes to DVD and sell them on iOffer so fans could finally see the missing episodes (plus see the existing ones in better quality).
I have sent various messages to NBC Universal re 'product suggestions' on their shop webpage asking for TNOTG TV series (1968-71) & the 1966 pilot movie 'Fame is...TNOTG' to be issued on DVD as a box set (hopefully in 'region 0' universal format) - together with the 'Rotating' opening graphic properly restored on each episode,
I also have sent emails to UK Channel Five TV channel requesting they rerun TNOTG & the pilot movie either on 'Channel Five' itself or their '5 USA' cable channel
someone on here should delete Budd Allbright from the cast credits on IMDb as he was a stunt performer who was NEVER credited in the show cast (I have tried unsuccessfully),
Allbright's name should be replaced by Tony Franciosa, alongside Gene Barry & Robert Stack, these were the three stars of the show.
Just saw an episode of Person of Interest which has so many direct parallels to "Breakout For a Fast Buck" that any writers still living should be getting royalty payments.
I loved this show when I was younger. to my young mind it was so-called hard hitting and better than most tv dramas. I loved that theme music. I now try to catch episodes on COZI tv channel. But those who try to watch in NYC, ,sometimes there will be an hour long ad instead of Name Of The Game.
I'm in the NYC area as well, and frustrated that NOTG has been preempted so often by 90 minutes of infomercials.
It seems to run regularly on early Thursday and Friday mornings, and occasional Sundays and Mondays if Cozi TV schedules it. The local NY affiliate had been blocking it with advertising Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
Quite by accident I caught S1E1 on Cozi. I actually woke up to it in the middle of the night and missed most of it but through the wonder of modern technology, my DVR had the whole show so I recorded it.
According to tv guide...it looks like Cozy TV is already showing ones they showed 2 months ago...I don't know of they have all the shows or only certain ones...hard to tell when they block em with info-mercials!
Looks like COZI has a limited selection of episodes to run-- seemingly the same limited number that the Encore Mystery channel ran back in the 1990s. I wish NBC would spring for new master copies-- there are many classic episodes that haven't been seen since 1970s syndication.
Just watched an episode of NOTG which actually turned out to be the same episode I only caught the last 5 minutes of last week. Don't know the name of it, but it's about what happens when a scientist(James Whitmore) decides to suddenly disappear/defect out of the country, for reasons known only to him. His friend, a tough reporter (the marvelous Darren McGavin) dosen't believe he actually defected, and tries to find out what actually happened to him, beyond the official line he's been given. The whole episode winds up being like a suspenseful Cold War thriller in itself, which I liked. Never heard of this show---I was only told about it at a movie site I visit, and liked what I saw. However, it comes on so late in the Detroit area on myTV20---3:00 a.m on Saturday nights--hell, they need to put it on earlier. I hate the fact that MyTV20 kicked DAVINCI'S INQUEST to the curb,though---I was like, "WTF? They got rid of DAVINCI'S for what? Damn!"
Will be peeping for the rest of the show's upcoming episodes, though.
The episode is titled "Goodbye, Harry" and I agree, it was one of the better segments of "The Name of the Game." Darren McGavin guest starred as reporter Sam Hardy, which was a one-off character that didn't reappear.
'Goodbye Harry' is one of SEVEN episodes of TNOTG that do not feature either Gene Barry, Tony Franciosa, or Robert Stack as lead...
1) season one: 'Pineapple Rose' - stars Cliff Potter (Potts) as 'Andrew Hill' - Glenn Howard's assistant who investigates the mistaken identity kidnapping of Peggy Maxwell (Susan Saint James). Gene Barry cameos a few times & it's put under his segment but, notably, is Produced by Leslie Stevens (Tony Franciosa segment producer) thus might have been originally a 'TF' episode (featuring GB in cameos) that for some reason he never filmed ?
Tony Franciosa only did six episodes, plus one cameo in the GB story; 'The Taker', in season one but then did seven episodes in season two and was originally contracted for seven episodes in season three (where as GB did ten lead stories & RS nine in season one), so maybe 'Pineapple Rose' was originally written as a TF episode, then for whatever reason was quickly given to Cliff Potter (a supporting cast member who only did this 'one off' lead role) with GB in cameo and then duly re-allocated to GB segment ?
2) season two: 'Goodbye Harry' - 'one off' Guest stars Darren McGavin as cynical but witty freelance newsman 'Sam Hardy' who gives old friend Glenn Howard first refusal on any stories he digs up....here one re a missing scientist Harry Rourke (James Whitmore) again it features Gene Barry in a cameo and is put under his segment - possibly this episode was a 'series pilot' idea ?
3)season two: 'Man of The People' - another 'one off' Guest Starring Vera Miles as Howard's top female reporter 'Hilary Vanderman', again GB cameos as 'Glenn Howard' & it's put under his segment (this too might have been a possible 'series pilot' idea ?).
in season three after Tony Franciosa's controversial exit (after filming three episodes)the remaining four episodes of his segment are 'subbed' by three special guest leads.
4) & 5) - Robert Culp (of 'I Spy' fame) guested as Howard Publications reporter 'Paul Tyler' in two episodes; 'Cynthia is Alive and Living in Avalon' and 'Little Bear Died Running'
6) - Peter Falk (later of 'Columbo' fame) guested as Howard Publications reporter 'Lewis Corbett' in; 'A Sister From Napoli'
7) - Robert Wagner (later of 'Hart To Hart' fame) guested as Howard Publications reporter 'David Corey' in; 'The Man Who Killed A Ghost'
Susan Saint James played 'Peggy Maxwell' in some of these for continuity purposes...and the three guests (plus Vera Miles' female reporter earlier, together with Darren McGavin's freelance newsman who knew Howard of old) duly created the impression that 'Howard Publications' was a vast publishing empire employing and utilising many other top reporters & freelancers besides the usual three rotating leading stars, giving the show extra credibility.
One other variation was that Tony Franciosa & Susan Saint James together co-star in; 'The King of Denmark' in season two (put under Franciosa's segment) where 'Peggy Maxwell' has the bigger onscreen role, Franciosa appears as 'Jeff Dillon' right at the start sending Peggy Maxwell off on a research job for a story (re a lost Shakespeare manuscript) & Dillon turns up for the final 20 minutes looking for her & they co-lead from then on.
All other episodes of TNOTG star either Tony Franciosa, Gene Barry, or Robert Stack
people should now THANK Cozi TV for putting it on again...and in the daytime slot now too
...and ASK NBC Universal to finally restore & put the complete 76 episode 1968-71 TV series & it's 1966 color pilot movie; 'Fame is The Name of The Game' starring Tony Franciosa, out on DVD...!!
Unfortunately COZI has stopped running THE NAME OF THE GAME pretty much since December--that sucks, as I had gotten kind of hooked on the show---especially the mystery and action episodes. What happened with that? It's not like they had a major replacement for it or anything. I did send an e-mail to the local station that ran it abut putting it back on again, but never got an answer about it---oh well, them's the breaks.
Hey, the show's back on COZI again---at 1:00 a.m. Sat. and Sunday nights---and on another thread on this board, it either is or will be coming out on DVD soon---finally!
