Why not much discussion for Mod Squad??

I thought there would be many more boards for this show- especially when in comparison to other shows of its time period. I can see teenagers/ 20 somethings of that time really enjoying watching this show based on its portrayal of counter culture themes, music, etc. Watching it today- some of the episodes don't hold up too good, but that's what makes it entertaining to watch...

reply

Unfortunately this is the case with many TV shows produced before the 21st century.

Check out the boards for the original Hawaii-5-O, witch also debuted in 1968, and compare it to the boards for the remake.

reply

Probably because it is rarely shown on TV anymore. So people younger than mid 40s probably don't even know it exists. I'm 46 and was very young when it first aired, but remember my parents watching it first run. Then I watched it throughout the 70s in reruns, but even I haven't seen the show in about 30 years because it rarely gets aired in syndication.

If it has been aired it's probably been on some cable channel that's not on basic cable and not everyone gets.

I've just been thinking about buying the new complete series DVD set that is being released in November, 2013 so I can see it again.

Not that I'm picking on your reply but I don't see why an old show needs to be in reruns a lot in order to be talked about here.

If there were enough people what watched The Mod Squad during its run, there should be enough people to discuss it or any other classic TV show.

reply

It doesn't, but only the people who saw it originally and in syndication during the 70s are going to remember it. If it had been seen on TV in the last 30 years, then there would be new generations of fans and more people would be talking about it.

Like I said anybody younger than early to mid 40s isn't going to know about this show because it hasn't been aired in 30 years.

Other classic shows get discussed on IMDb but a lot of them have fans of all ages because of reruns of those shows.

Remember the OPs original question was "Why not much discussion for Mod Squad??". A smaller audience means less discussion on the show's IMDb board. A bigger audience would mean more discussion of the show.

Think you're a little off in your thinking when you say those who saw the reruns are only gonna remember it.

reply

First of all, I did NOT say that only those who saw it in reruns would remember it, I said, "only the people who saw it originally and in syndication during the 70s are going to remember it" and that if it had been shown in reruns over the last 30 years that more younger people would know of the show giving the show a bigger audience

It was on that ME TV channel for a couple of years until just recently- now they've replaced it with something else. Too bad because I found it to be a refreshing alternative to much of the programming of today... especially some of the episodes were they heavily focus on the politics and undercurrent of that time period-

If you all look at the IMDb vote (which gives MOD SQUAD a 6.7, which seems a little low) that ratings derives from only 600+ votes.

That means that not only has the show not been seen by "the kids" but not by the grown-ups either (at least, not in ages).

Some older shows get widely syndicated, while others -- which were just as big a hit at the time -- somehow haven't gotten the rerun play in a long time.

Who knows why...

MOD SQUAD was not too badly done, by the standards of TV 40+ years ago, and even hit #1 in the Nielsen ratings in the summer of 1970. Plus, it's a bit of a period piece.

It should get an airing out.

It was on that ME TV channel for a couple of years until just recently- now they've replaced it with something else.

Yes, MeTV was running MOD SQUAD and POLICE WOMAN (which also went to #1 one summer in the '70s) when it was just a Chicago station, but some of those shows were dropped (permanently, as I understand it) once MeTV went more national.

Gloria Steinem hates POLICE WOMAN, so no wonder no one's seen it in years if at all (what Gloria wants, Gloria gets) but I don't have a clue as to what's squelched MOD SQUAD.

And that's what I mean.

It shouldn't have to matter whether younger people have seen this and other classic shows.

It's those who watched them at the time they were new that I would expect to see posting here first and not those who saw them in reruns later on.

Where are those people?

reply

But even the older folks are going to post in much lesser numbers if the show has been mostly out of circulation for decades.

--

reply

Why's that?

reply

Because some of them forget.

The show was on in first-run when I was a kid (I'm 52) but I've never seen a single episode. Wish MeTV would run it again.

reply

Hello, I know your post is several months old but I wanted to tell you that MeTV has just started (finally) airing the show again. It may only be for a short time, I'm not too sure.

I'm sure you already know about MeTV's new shake-up but I thought I'd send you a gentle reminder anyway.

I just looked it up on Amazon, and the highest number of reviews for any type of season, was about 20 reviews. I saw lots of 3 reviews per certain seasons. That's a big indication of how popular a show is. (Whoops! I stand corrected: Season 1, Part 1 had 54 reviews, but all other info. stands.)

I agree, this show really stands out from my youth for some reason....I thought there would be more buzz on here as well. I was too young for the original run, but it went into syndication as soon as it went off the air in my town. I watched it from 4pm-5pm in the afternoon in the mid 70's, then it disappeared. I DVR'd & watched all 5 seasons when Metv was running it. A great blast from the past for sure man (solid).

reply

I'm old enough to have watched the show in its first-run. I only watched because I, like every other teen girl, had a crush on Michael Cole. But, even back then, I thought the show was kind of silly. It tried too hard to be cool. All the "mans" and "groovys" and "solids." Some of us used to laugh at it. And cops not carrying guns! On what planet? I can't imagine wanting to watch it today, although I still have a crush on Michael!

reply

That's what made the show groundbreaking....in an age of cops being hated & labeled as pigs, these 3 "kids" were able to go deep undercover & get information. You had Adam-12 showing traditional uniformed day-to-day police work, & The Mod Squad working behind the scenes. Besides, where are you going to stash a piece in those tight jeans??

reply

How silly and shallow.

reply

Thanks Eddysfitzboy! i haven't been on these boards in some time- but I did notice Mod Squad has been back on Metv for a few months now... such a good show to watch in the morning... and the intro music still rocks!

reply

I making my obligatory, 6-month post on this board! 

Anyway, I'm flipping between this show and an NFL playoff game... I think the Mod Squad is gonna win! 

I havent seen this show on tv in 30 years or more, so no one is gonna talk abut a show not airing.
Plus it is old and dated
It is airing on a local channel now , so I am going to watch one today.

Another sill fool saying how dated it is.

I own eight episodes of DVD but can't get the whole box set in my country (Australia)...if I had the box set I would have more to discuss I guess.

reply

That's a good question.I wonder, the three principle actors in the show didn't go on to bigger and better. They may have guest starred in some shows, but they didn't have a big hit to bring in new fans for their old series.Peggy Lipton has kept in the news a little more than the others.Maybe it's for the better.Super fame can sometimes destroy decent people.
