Why Didn't Pete and Julie ever get together?

It was obvious practically from the beginning that Pete cared for her, more than just a friend. And even though they both dated others, they always came back to each other!
And the reunion tv-movie, the only part they got right was Linc becoming a teacher. Julie married to wealth, her daughter going to riding school-AND even worse, Pete selling out to run his father's business-NO WAY! Remember the 2nd season flashback episode, where Linc got shot at the same time that Pete`s father had tricked him into joining the "family business"? When he tried to explain that Linc`s life was MORE IMPORTANT than a business meeting and Pete ended up hanging up on him?! For me, that was when he officially closed the door on that part of his life!
I think even in the reunion movie, it was apparent that Pete still had feelings for Julie! By the end, when Linc was going back to his life and Julie was going back to hers, I felt so bad because Pete had nothing to go back to and if they would've had another sequel it would've been Pete`s funeral after committing suicide!!
And I hated the remake, apparently as much as Peggy and Michael did! No offense to the actor who played Pete, but he made I look as if he had some type of mental illness!!Really bad!!
I just think that it would have been great to see them together-they had good chemistry! And just on looks and having a warm, yet COOL, personality, there's no one better than Pete Cochrane!
Thank you Michael Cole for creating such an unforgettable, beautiful character!

Julie should have hooked up with Linc!! It would have been so delicious, sweet, sexy, and forward thinking. Also, it would have literally previewed her luscious interracial relationship with Mr.Q.

they would hve made a really kewl couple...just the great vibe between the 2 if those 2 got together in the late 60's they would hve been 2gether forever....

I always saw SO much chemistry between Julie and Pete! Agreed! NEVER with Linc and Julie (as another commentor, louis-brando, thought). And even though decades ago I still remember that heart-breaking scene in the movie with Pete and Julie alone in the car as he asks about her life and how she is etcetera, and it's painfully OBVIOUS that he still is interested in her as more than a friend!! And yet the theme was never explored in the movie!!!

WHY do writers DO this?? I honestly don't get it. Being that they didn't ever get together in the show, it would have made sense to appease the fans who had always wanted them together to at least give them that in the movie, years later!! Worst of all, why bring up his undying interest in her in the MOVIE if you're not going to follow through??!! 🙄

If you watch the first season, it actually seemed like Julie was pining after Pete while he still seemed clueless to her interest. But especially in that first season (and possibly 2nd season --sorry but it's been decades since I've watched!), the writers were always playing on them as a "couple" even doing one episode where they portrayed a neyly-mariied couple and in which they actually kissed to divert suspicion.

All I know is that I always LOVED when he would call her "Angel." (Swoon).
