Wheres Otis

I can't find information about "Otis" in this web site.
He was the town drunk that use to let himself in and out of the jail.

reply

he was probably just written out of the show, because he was a character on the original Andy Griffith show.

reply

Actually, Otis was seldom seen in the later color episodes of TAGS either. By the time they got around to Mayberry RFD he was kind of forgotten about. Too bad, because he was a darn funny character.

reply

Okay, so you don't pay much attention to the show I guess. In the one where Otis is staying at Andy's house, at the end Aunt Bee makes him stop drinking or he'll have to come back and work for her again. So I guess he's not in the show anymore because he's no fun if he's not drunk.

If you love Jesus Christ and are 100% proud of it copy this and make it your signature!

reply

In "Return To Mayberry", Otis is sober and driving an ice cream truck. Maybe he's in detox during "RFD".

reply

Oh isn't that true. Why would you have Otis on the show if he was clean and sober? Almost as pointless as that really OLD guy that would sometimes be playing checkers there in the court house (the one that looked like he was a week-old corpse)

reply

It certainly IS true. In these politically correct times, Otis was a recovering alcoholic who drove an ice cream truck...nothing funny about a drunk.

reply

As someone mentioned, Otis wasn't on 'Mayberry RFD,' and he was already being phased out while 'The Andy Griffith Show' was on the air. His last appearance on 'TAGS' was in December of 1966, more than a year before the show went off the air.
I've read that as 'TAGS' continued, the writers and producers began to second-guess the original decision to have a "funny drunk" character. Clearly, Otis was an alcoholic -- and as sensibilities changed, that became less funny to people.
I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the decision to get rid of Otis, but I think that was the thinking behind it.

reply

They could have simply sobered him up then. Otis isn't the only character on TAGS who disappears never to be seen again. The show never really did farewells for any of the outgoing characters. They usually just disappeared, and sometimes it would be mentioned later what happened to them. Otis started doing his drinking in Mt. Pilot, Floyd got a shop in Raleigh, Barney became a detective, Warren just disappeared, the Darlings disappeared, and even Andy just disappeared during the RFD years. Andy is seen as sheriff about half of Season 1, and then is never mentioned until he shows up in season 2 with his new baby, Andy Jr, and he's no longer sheriff.

Yes, I always wondered why Otis didn't stay on the straight and narrow after his visit to The Rock.

reply

Actually ,Floyd closes the shop and moves in with his daughter. In real life Howard Mcnair was too ill to work.

It seems that the early black and white episodes had more memorable characters, if the show had continued as it had it would have been about Opie's high school years and his friends. --Basically, "Happy Days".

Otis was drunk again in the color episode where Warren decided to reform him and taught him to paint.

reply

It was mosaics.

reply

It was mentioned in one of the latter episodes of TAGS that Otis had moved to Mount Pilot. In the reunion movie he showed up back in Mayberry clean and sober.
