Interesting side story here -- the original name of the dog in the pilot episode was Rusty. He had been rescued and bought from the pound by his trainer for $7.50... that's about $47.00 in today's money. The dog's real name was Scruffy, and the writers decided they liked that name better than Rusty, and the dog answered to it, so he became Scruffy on the show, also. Cleveland Amory, critic for TV Guide in 1968 praised this most excellent show highly, and made special mention of him.
