Very Underrated TV Show
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir was one of my favorite shows as a little kid. The cast was so good especially Hope Lange and Reta Shaw. I haven't seen this show in over 30 years so I'm really hoping the DVD rumors are true!

I saw the movie years ago and read the novel about a year and a half ago and discovered the show several months ago. Considering how femininely offensive Twilight is (with a very vapid and needy lead) I was both surprised and impressed to discover something like The Ghost and Mrs. Muir ever existed.
I fell in love with the TV show when I was 11 - especially the Captain! Not nerdy or effiminate is he!
I hope the show comes to DVD soon, but I am losing hope. I see someone is selling them on EBAY, claiming the show is in public domain, so he has the rights to sell it. I don't believe this is true - there was a guy selling Ellery Queen on EBAY claiming he had the rights a while back - I imagine he is totally PO'd now that that show is coming to a legit dvd release. I just wish GAMM would...
in the meantime, I treasure my homemade DVDs. The quality isn't perfect, but I watch them over and over!
There's a weird rumour that the rights to The Ghost and Mrs. Muir might be in the hands of Sean Conory. I don't know how true that is. The book is twenty years too new or I'd say it's probably a public domain property now (the story, not the adaptations such as the film or TV show. I think those are owned by the network that released them).
I think what I liked most about The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is that though the male character was brass and certainly not a push over it was still very much the contrast of I dream of Genie. The female was the one in control, the one supporting the family, and the ghost, no matter how reluctant, caved in to her every whim. I didn't know anything like that existed on TV in the sixties.
I think the movie rights are owned by Sean Connery, but not the TV rights, (except they are borrowing the premise, kinda) for an Australian TV show called "Spirited."
But they have changed a few things - the lady is a dentist and the ghost is a deceased rock star from the 80's...
But you're right - GAMM, Julia and the Doris Day Show all released in the fall of 1968 featured women in charge of their own lives (through widowhood, not divorce). It was the beginning of a whole new world.
I read about Spirited. But they changed the plot so much that they wouldn't get in trouble with any copyright holder who tried to call them out on it.
I agree, but what is interesting is some of the really early publicity mentioned that the actress playing the lead said she got the idea for the show because she loved GAMM when it was on TV.
Oh well... I want to see if I can find the pilot, just to see if it is any good, but as it is only playing in Australia, it may be difficult!
I've already made a little hint that Syzygy should carry it. It's a new Science fiction channel that intends to compete with Syfy.
I'm sorry - I missed that hint. And with my basic cable, I have NOOOOO idea if I will have access to it. Heck, I am two months behind on Doctor Who, and I still haven't seen this new version of Sherlock Holmes done by the same people.
