Final Episode Wedding Day

Was this episode made as a final episode? It has that feel to it and kind of wraps a few things up (i.e. hope for Claymore, Capt and Mrs say they love each other).

Is it just a coincidence or was the non-renewal of the series already known to the writers?

P.S. Why does IMDB post Martha's picture as the one associated with this series? Why not Scruffy?

Hi!

From an interview on the Carson show, shortly after the series was cancelled, Charles Nelson Reilly said they did NOT know the show had been cancelled when the last episode was filmed. In fact, they got the word that it had been while on a publicity tour for the show! CNR said that he, Mulhare and Lange holed up in their expensive rooms, did NOT check out, and ordered a lot of room service, and CNR and Edward also had expensive cigars sent up --- all this charged to ABC.

Hope Lange got the last laugh though. She won her second consecutive Emmy for her work on the show (she had won a year earlier when NBC ran the show and had cancelled it). Don Adams won for Get Smart the same year (also cancelled) and the year before, William Windom won for "My World and Welcome To It," which NBC had cancelled.

I think the feeling of a finale you are seeing is only because it was the last show of the season, and they had to just end it. Back in those days, you just didn't see the season cliffhangers that you do now. The last Get Smart episode was nothing special or final either -- it was just another episode.

Nowadays, it seems that the writers, producers, etc. know when a show is getting the plug pulled and they can plan accordingly.

As for IMDB putting up Reta Shaw's picture on the front page, I have absolutely no idea! As a collector of GAMM memorabelia, I have several pictures that would be a better representation of the show.

But IMDB is weird. Edward Mulhare only got a picture added this year on his page. Same with Jeremy Brett.

Anyone know how to submit pictures to the IMDB page?

HI,

Thanks for the information. Very interesting.

Interested in your opinion on something....Barbara Eden, Marlo Thomas, Elizabeth Montgomery, Barbara Feldon, Sally Field. All created iconic characters in the 1960s. None won an Emmy for their shows.

Hope Lange won two years in a row!. I'm not bashing Lange or the show, I like it, but Emmy-worthy two years in a row?

I realize you are biased, after all you are "ghostfan", but does that make sense to you?

reply

Yes, I think it does.... at least the way the Emmy's were won at the time. In a lot of ways, GAMM would probably be classified NOW more as a comedy/drama, not just a comedy series, and that gave Miss Lange the edge. If you have seen all the episodes, there were definitely some serious moments in GAMM (watch episodes like The Monkey Puzzle Tree, Dear Delusion, or even the pilot, and you can see this, and while Hope played comedy very well, she excelled more as a dramatic actress... much more at AT THE TIME than any of the other iconic actresses you mentioned... who did later go on and do some very good dramatic parts. Not having seen the other shows you mention in many years for the most part, I don't remember, except for one or two odd-episodes, any of the actresses throwing a dramatic moment into their comedy.

I asked her Hope's son, Christopher Murray, not long ago if he had any pictures of his mom's Emmy's and whether or not he knew which episode Hope won for (nowadays, when an actor is nominated for "Best" there is a particular episode listed with the nomination) - he said no - that she won for her overall performance the whole season... it even says so on the base of her statue.

Yeah, I think she deserved it. And while I would never bash the other women's work, the only series I have on DVD 40 years later (I was around when all these shows aired originally) is Get Smart -- and that is because I also enjoy Don Adams' and Ed Platt's work on the show as well.

You have me interested now... Hope Lange won for the 68-69 and 69-70 seasons -- who beat out these fine actresses the other years? Get Smart was on for five years, Jeannie for at least five, Flying Nun for three or four (I think) and Bewitched for a lot more...

reply

1964 and 1966 Mary Tyler Moore, 1967 & 1968 Lucille Ball. Looks like no similar category in 1965. In the early 1960s it was Shirley Booth for "Hazel".

I've seen all the GAMM episodes and am a fan. I'm not a huge fan of the other series I've mentioned, but did see episodes as a kid and am familiar with the characters and story line (Get Smart more than the others).

I wasn't suggesting an Emmy conspiracy theory or anything, nor bashing Hope in any way, but I bet the general public (45 yrs old and older) would be surprised by the fact that Hope won two Emmys and those other actresses had none.

Particularly, Jeannie, That Girl, Bewitched and Flying Nun. Arguably, the woman who starred in those shows created iconic roles and pretty much carried their shows single-handed.

I commend you on your steadfast loyalty, though. You are the keeper of the torch and defender of the faith. :)

Oh, I didn't think you were -- It is surprising though, isn't it? I remember enjoying all the shows you mentioned when I was a kid -- and either saw them all in prime time, or in the first run of re-runs, so to speak. To be honest, it really doesn't surprise me that Sally Field was never nominated for Flying Nun, but look what happened! She's won two Oscars, and is up for a third. Elizabeth Montgomery went on to do several fantastic TV movies - like A Case Of Rape, and the Legend of Lizzie Borden, Barbara Eden made TV movies and has a good singing career... to be honest, I wish Feldon could have gone on and created another iconic character later on, or been in more movies... but All of them have a role they are famous for.

Tell me, are you interested in more about GAMM? if so, there are some yahoo groups I can link you to.

I have some better DVD's that the heavily edited episodes up on Youtube, which I treasure, because I am beginning to think this show is never going to get released to DVD. I keep hoping though - it took ages for Ellery Queen to get a legit DVD release, and it only ran for one season. Same with Here Come The Brides, which was on the same two years GAMM was. And one more year I will have (I hope!) the complete Perry Mason!

Thanks, but I think I'm GAMMed out for a while. Just finished those youtube episodes and while I think it was great that someone posted those, the network editing was criminal.

I've got to take a break and watch something more macho, as my wife is looking at me a little funny and I think she's wondering if her middle-aged tough guy is going soft...watching a gentle, innocent, non-violent, romantic show like GAMM.

Hey, one other thing, since you seem so knowledgable, Hope died pretty young, from something that seems like it's not usually life threatening. Was it just bad luck or is there more to it (i.e. was she already in poor health)?

reply

Don't think so -- not anything specific. She died of an infection, I believe, but I'm not sure she was in the hospital at the time for something else or not. She had survived a brain tumor in the 80's though. Like I said, I have been in touch with Christopher by e mail (irregularly) but don't feel I know him well enough to ask what kicked off the colitis.

She was 72, I believe -- and while not super old, like say, Betty White, Patrick Macnee, Barbara Hale, all in their 90's, etc, she wasn't exactly young either.

You sound like you're somewhere around my age -- and back, then, as you know, there was a lot more drinking, as a norm, going on, and everyone, it seemed smoked, and I know that couldn't have helped either... wears the old body out faster. From personal experience, I can tell you what happened to me after 20 years of being a light to medium smoker... not cancer, but, still!

After watching this episode again , the way it ended with her saying , "Captain if you were alive this cottage would be a palace" made my heart ache. oh man in my mind i wanted them to somehow finally get to hold each other in real time and get married .

"So, a thought crossed your mind? Must have been a long and lonely journey"
