According to TV Shows on DVD, rumor has it that MPI Media Group will be bringing "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" to DVD hopefully by the end of this year. Entire article below.
This is great news! The bad part is (maybe), MPI will be releasing it. A question: I've seen some of MPI's "Dark Shadows" releases and the quality is TERRIBLE. Does anyone know if they're doing a better job at compression?
My wife will be glad of the news that the series will be available on DVD. She said it was one of her favorite series'. She was 10 - 11 years old when it was on.
We recently rented a DVD of the 1947 movie and she thought it was great even though she only knew the actors Rex Harrison and Nattalie Wood. To not to every seen Gene Tierney and George Saunders was her loss, but now she's at least seen them once.
I'll be looking forward towards it! Isn't it funny how Charles Nelson Reilly played the last living descendent of Captain Daniel Gregg and he the actor is also one of the last living adult leads from the show, the kids are probably still alive but obviously aren't in the business anymore, and yet Reilly is still chugging along...
I'm looking forward to a possible DVD release too, but the last thing the GAMM Yahoo group heard is that it is still a rumor. No release date, nothing locked in stone. I wish they would hurry up. With all the other shows around, some that only ran a SEASON being released, you'd think FOX, or whoever owns it would get busy. In the meantime my DVD's transferred from tapes of the show when it ran in California in the 80's I keep in a VERY safe place!
They also ran on a cable station called FX in the early 90's. Only problem is, FX chopped the heck out of them and some of the DVD's you see showing up on EBAY from time to time are from these cut versions.
In my opinion, the studios believe there is a limited market for TV series pre-1970. That is why you are seeing the outsourcing of some titles (i.e. Universal to Shout Factory for Ironside, Banacek, etc.)
I wrote to MPI Media Group and they said "THe Ghost and MRs. Muir" isn't theres and they have no other info on it. Today I emailed Fox Entertainment and TV Land to tell them that we Gammy's would love to see the series on DVD with some bonus features. And today wrote who I think may have been a very dear old friend of Edward Mulhare to ask for her help as well. Waiting anxiously for some replys>
Still no word on an official release after two years since this post, but I have found a really good set. Someone on EBAY was selling it, and said it had gone into Public Domain last year.
I don't know about that, but the set he is selling is very, very good... I believe it was recorded from when Nick At Nite ran the show in Australia. Along with a few known cut scenes that were put back, like the housekeeping scene in the pilot, and the broth making scene in Medicine Ball, I caught a few other minor moments. If anything has been cut from the original broadcast, It would have to be whatever went when the show first went into syndication in 1970.
Another nice thing is all the credits are there, and there are no annoying announcers talking or pop ups teasing the next show. Is for color/clarity, I judge it to be a 9.5 out of ten... and the price is quite reasonable!
