Your favourite Captain Mulhare or Harrison?

I love Rex Harrison as the Captain in the 1947 film. I think he captures the gruff exterior hiding a kind heart aspect of the Captain well. He's also believable as the worldly former seaman who's not afraid to say what he thinks.

Harrison also does a superb job showing us how amused and intrigued with Mrs. Muir the Captain is becoming. He and Gene Tierney have good chemistry.

I love Edward's portrayal in the series even more though. Edward's Captain is not as gruff and rough as Harrison's, he's tender and gentle and shows us how much he is starting to care for Mrs. Muir.

Mulhare is makes you wish the Captain was real and there is a warmth about him that makes him really likeable, plus he looks very handsome too. He and Hope Lange have good chemistry. I love the comedy in the series but I always look forward to the serious scenes between the Captain and Carolyn where you see how much they care for each other.

I like them both very much but my favourite is Mulhare. What about you?

Mulhare, absolutely.

It't beome a lifelong hobby of mine to try and find a recording of everything he has ever been in!

How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

Mulhare - as much as the writing for the Captain. He's wonderfully misogynistic, a quality I appreciate as I get to that age.

It's funny that on the one occasion he acted the part of his Irish descendant, his Irish accent was atrocious. And, yet, he was born and raised in Cork.

I have a friend who knows the Mulhare family, and she actually asked them about that episode and his accent. They said that his accent in that is what is known among REAL Irish as "Stage Irish."

You get a much better idea of his REAL accent watching him in Hill 24 Doesn't Answer.
