GHOST AND MRS MUIR COMING TO DVD-REALLY.....

This show is finally, finally, getting a legitimate release-sort of.

Kellie Flanagan, (Candy Muir) has been working with Madman Productions in Australia and they are releasing a real, straight from the Fox vaults GAMM! -- the only problem is, it is only available in Region 4 PAL discs. $30 bucks a season, (I don't know what the conversion is to Australian currency) quite reasonable, but I have no idea what the postage is to the US or Canada from Australia!

The first season releases April 14 and it is available for pre-order. The second season, not sure of a release date, is also available for pre-order.

So come on -- if you have an all region DVD, or PAL discs play on your computer (do they?) this is your chance to own a real unedited set.

I understand that there will be some extras -- I believe they have a collection of publicity stills.

Oh, and by the way -- Fox has no control over the "owned" music used on the show, but luckily, GAMM used very little popular music. But Kellie said rest assured, the Music Maker episode (1-26) is complete with Harry Nilson's music. The only bad news in the whole release, is Disney owns the rights to "Lavender Blue" which Kellie sung in the second season with Mark Lester, of Oliver! fame. It became 'theirs' after they used it in 'So Dear To My Heart' - 1946 - with Burl Ives. Disney wasn't willing to release the song, so the part with Candy and Mark singing was cut.

Below is a link to the site, and I presume to order.

Ohhhh this is so frustrating! Why is it only going to be released in Australia when it's an American series? How much longer do we American fans of the series have to wait before we get a Region 1 release?

No idea. But as soon as I get a hospital bill paid, I am going to start pricing multi-region bue ray players...

I just wanted to tell everyone that Mad Man from Australia shipped my GAMM order early, and I received it yesterday. I could not wait to watch a few episodes to see how this wonderful show would look if Mad Man did it justice.

OMG--both the visual and audio are fantastic. To me, the show looks as if it was filmed yesterday. Now, I don't know if every single episode will look as great as the first 3, but if they do, I've hit the jackpot after owning several non-official copies. I forget whether Mad Man said these disks are re-mastered, but they certainly look it.

Even the cases and disc art are so professional (which they should be), with a different image on each disk.

BTW, I don't think the prices of multi-region DVD players are prohibitive any more. I forget what I paid for mine, but it was so worth it, knowing that I sometimes order disks from the UK. I actually think I paid more for my Blu-Ray player, which is not multi-region.

ghostfan--I think I got my multi-region DVD player through Amazon.

reply

I just ordered my multi region dvd player from Amazon... just dvd not blue ray, and it was 55.00...

So expand... the pilot... I have a very very very old recording taken from a 16 mm film... there is a scene in there toward the end where she walks in on him when he is talking to the kids while they are asleep. Is that scene back? And does it take place before or after the quote below?

Madman told Kellie they the recordings were straight from the vault at Fox.

I can't wait to compre these recordings to my gamm scripts!

I don't remember the scene with the Captain talking to the kids while they're asleep, but I did doze off for a couple minutes (I know.....shame on me.)

The "How sad......" comment came at the end, so if that other scene is there, it would have had to come before that. I had to rewind to catch the "How sad....." monologue. I was watching this around 1 in the morning (I know there's no excuse for dozing off through any of this wonderful show). LOL

So there may still be more that did not get restored?

Anyhow, it was great to see the "cleaning the house" scene in the pilot. Looking forward to more.

reply

Well, the talking to the kids scene, as I said, was in a 16mm of the pilot that someone in our yahoo gamm group bought on ebay about 15 years ago now.

It is possible that the film was a pre-pilot version that escaped.

Primarily, there is that scene where he is talking to the kids, (that in the pilot script came AFTER the "how sad" speech) and there are a few words here and there when Claymore is telling the Captain he has rented the house, and a few lines when they are looking at the kitchen.

The film I have, which is really not good quality at all, has Mrs. Muir saying something like "Don't worry about that, Martha can accomplish wonders in the kitchen" and Martha responding "for this kitchen, you may want Martha Washington."

Most of the versions, good and bad that I have seen, I have three, stop at Carolyn saying "Don't worry about that."

The versions I have from Nick at Nite that ran in Australia did have the housecleaning scene though.

Edit: multi region dvd player has arrived: seems to be working well, though I was disappointed that it does not play .divx files. I have another homemade set of another show, and all the files are in that format. But, it's a series... and I still have a dvd player that will play them, so if I get in a mood, I can move some plugs around.

I have also ordered the two seasons, but they haven't arrived yet. So looking forward to it!

Well, at $30 it's rather expensive---and how much do you want to bet that it will become available in the US for a low price later on? Still, I was happy to pre-order season one from Australia (already have a multi-region DVD player so that's not a problem). I'm looking forward to seeing it!

reply

I figured since I am a die hard fan, and the postage would be so much higher, I might as well do both seasons at once and get it out of the way.

I know what you mean, though -- you spend money on something you have been waiting forever for and suddenly it is available.

But there are any number of series that end up being around $30 or more when you order from Amazon, or even going to the discount stores.

CSI is currently like $40 bucks a season.

Perry Mason, which I love, was sold a half a season at a time, even when the number of episodes per season dropped during the later years... and I haven't heard a thing about GAMM being released here yet!

Of course, if Kellie or Harlen know anything, they probably don't have permission to say, anyway!

Hello fellow GAMM fans!

I've been a fan of this show since the 90's when it was shown on Australian tv. Needless to say I was on cloud nine when I discovered an Australian company was releasing BOTH seasons! Anyway just bought S1 - should get it soon. Also I thought I'd post the following(copied from another forum) from the guy who did the remastering. And from the comments here it seems he did a stellar job!

"And those are most likely my fine, fine late-1990s transfers of this show done for Fox. Note that I rebuilt the opening credits from scratch, taking the shots from the original episodes rather than using dupes-of-dupes. I don't doubt it's the best the show ever looked. Also used the original mag track masters. We did both PAL and NTSC transfers, so whatever they release in Australia is most likely still from those sessions.

I'm surprised Fox in America didn't release them here!"

Can you point me in the direction of this website? A link, maybe?

Here's a link to the thread/forum.

It's mostly a music site but there is a section for tv,movies etc.

Thank you for the link, and I am sorry for my late response.

It always surprises me when I read comments about how this show "copied" Bewitched and I Dream of Jeanne.

The book and the movie that were the inspiration for this series were around way before either one of the other TV shows. The book was published in 1945 and the movie came out in 1947 -- so who is copying whom?

I watched Bewitched and Jeanne, and while they did last longer, Ghost has always been my top pick. It was just harder for it to progress.. at least as a half hour TV sit com. The censors wouldn't let him learn to be solid, because that would mean... gasp... they could kiss and or make love without benefit of matrimony.

Bewitched -- she was married to Darin already, so it didn't matter.

Actually, I always wondered why the censors didn't crack down more on Jeanne.,.. after all, she was magic, touchable and living in the same house as Major Nelson. Why didn't the censors have a problem with that?

Ah well, at least GAMM has some really good fan fiction to fill the gaps and survive, even if the series didn't.

From some of the news articles I have pulled about the show and the actors over the years, after one season, both Mulhare and Lange were eager to get on and do other things. Odd in some ways when you consider the name of the game now is to get a good part on a show, and stay for a while!

So can you order it and have it shipped to the USA? Not worried about the region release. I just wonder how much shipping would be and how to go about ordering it.
It says 29.95 for the first season which in US currency is $27.97 plus shipping.

reply

Yep. I have two friends that adore this series and they live in Canada and it was no problem shipping there either. The shipping IS more than say... Amazon, but I think it was worth it, considering the likelihood of it getting released in the US seems to grow dimmer every year! I think the shipping was around fifteen dollars or so, but pinkicicle might know. She? ordered just the first season, and I believe she lives in the US. My Discover Card bill for the month hasn't come yet, or I could tell you exactly what I paid in US funds, for both seasons, though Ebay/Australianshowsondvd

Yeah, in retrospect the cost for both seasons was more than say, going through Amazon for two seasons of The Mentalist, but for me, it was worth it. Kind of my gift to myself at tax return time. I have been waiting for this show to be released since they first started releasing TV shows and movies on VHS, and I have been living with homemade taped from TV transferred to DVDs for ten years, and loved it since I saw it in prime time back in 1968.

Love your icon, by the way!

ghostfan--I just happened to be looking through this forum, and I saw your reference to pink_icicle so I thought I'd respond.

I do live in the US; and when I checked my records, I saw that I paid $13.00 for shipping. Normally, I would not pay that much, but I felt it was so worthwhile to get a good-quality copy of this beloved series. I didn't want to wait to see if it will ever get released in the US.

I justified treating myself. I've seen certain items on e-Bay that have a $13.00 or $14.00 shipping charge.

Like you, ghostfan, I ordered both seasons.

I hope you're enjoying them as I am.

reply

Oh, I certainly am! It is lovely to have perfect copies! I am thinking about investing in another all region player for my living room. Long story, but re wiring everything in my living room (whole enclosed entertainment center there and surround sound, so it would be a royal pain to do)but haven't yet. I watch them in my bedroom.

I think I paid a bit more going through ebay, but I already had an account and paypal set up there.

And yeah -- if the show ever comes out in the US, I would probably buy them again! (at least now--- if I ever get the players moved around, I may not!

How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

reply

Good luck to you with your re-wiring project, ghostfan. I TOTALLY get it; my entertainment areas are probably the most important parts of my living environment since I have such a large collection of DVDs. I'm like you; I have an all-region DVD player in my bedroom and my blu-ray player (not all-region) and another older DVD player in the living room. I still have a combo VCR/DVD player on hand just for those few tapes I have that are not available on DVD. I know I can convert them, but I haven't yet.

I'm with you--just in case the show ever does come to the US, I will definitely buy it again.

We deserve to enjoy great copies of GAM--look how long we've waited!

reply

*LAUGHS*

The DVD recorder in my living room is essentially a combination, like yours, except you can burn stuff from tape to DVD -- one of the reasons I still have mine is for the five or six bought tapes I have that I can't convert. I haven't watched them in quite a while though!

ah well... maybe some year it will happen.

I would love to know how many DVDs Mad Man has sold!

How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

Pink, I thought I would let you know... I finally got an all region dvd player working in the living room! I recently had my satelite company come over and convert me to an HD receiver. While he was at it, he also rewired my blue ray player so I could play it with a hdmi cord, not cables. He told me I had one more hdmi opening...

After two strikes, the third time was the charm... found an all region dvd player, cheap because it didn't have an hdmi cable output. Then I found this little converter to convert from the red white yellow cords to an hdmi cable.

I've been watching GAMM in the living room all night. Such a great show. I'm thrilled!

My husband snapped up a copy here in NZ the minute he saw it. The quality is wonderful and Edward Mulhare... oh my, I thought he was lovely when I was young and watched GAMMM and he was the main reason I ever watched Knightrider. Such a delightful show, and worth every cent, now just waiting for S2...

reply

Season2 is out! I bought mine the same time as season one! And you are so right about Edward Mulhare... that was the only reason I tuned in. And when I realized William Daniels, of 1776 fame, was doing the voice of KITT, I had to watch as often as I could... even with a very hairy work schedule way back when!

I ordered and received both seasons of TGAMM. They were a little pricey but in my opinion was worth it. I got in on the free shipping. It was 72.00 (USD). 29.00 for each season and the rate of exchange was $14.00 more. I have been watching an episode a week and am happy as the Ghost in Gull cottage. I play it on my computer with the help of a program or two. I will be buying a region free blueray soon.

reply

I bought a region free DVD player from Amazon last year just for GAMM. only problem was I could only play the DVDs in my bedroom, because I had to hook it up with the red-yellow-white cables. The USB outlet was being used for my USA Blue-Ray player.

Living room set up was weirder. Everything was wired through Surround-sound and I had already paid the cable company to wire everything -- that is, the Blue Ray Player. the DVD player/burner, the stereo stuff -- and I had no place to wire in yet another DVD player.

Then I realized that my TV had a third HDMI plug that was not being used. But I had to buy a converter to plug the cables of the region free player into and convert it to an HDMI cord. Everything finally works, except it doesn't go through surround sound. I can live with that! It's wonderful being able to watch the show in my living room. It was worth it, for this show. I fell in love with it when I was eleven, and lived without it, or with badly cut and copied episodes for years!
