Candy meets him?

I have one or two early episodes on my PC in which Candy doesn't know about the Captain, I also have the episode where she has a crush on the English boy played by Mark Lester in which she is talking to the Captain. Can any one tell me in which episode she first meets the Captain as I'd love to get it?

Sorry... there was never an episode where she officially meets him. When the show was cancelled by NBC, and picked up by ABC, the network decided to make the show more family friendly, and less romantic, and made the decision that Candy would know about the Captain. Why they didn't let Martha in on the secret, I have no idea. an early draft of the afore mentioned episode, Puppy Love indicated that would be when Candy would meet the Captain.

I was sorry no episode was ever produced... it could have been a lot better than some of the second season scripts.

I can point you toward a couple of good fan fics that explore the idea, however!

Thanks for the info, I thought it strange when I went through the episode plots on IMDB and couldn't find anything. They missed the chance of a good storyline there.

I think so, too, but I guess ABC decided that just her seeing him would be enough. It would be kind of odd (in those days) for a new network to open a new season that focused on characters other than the two leads. And don't forget, they were expanding the comedy more, which also meant that CNR was getting a bigger role, too.

The only thing they possibly could have done was have Candy NOT know about the Captain in The Great Power Failure, and then have her finding out episode be the second show of the new season instead.

Of course, Candy learning late might have opened a whole new floodgate of problems in general they wanted to avoid... at least in a half hour sit-com... not just HOW did she find out... could they do a decent plot in a half-hour? But also Candy's reactions to the whole thing. Would she be angry/hurt at her mother or the Captain for not telling her right away? would she adjust to the Captain quickly? Would she harbor a grudge because she didn't know about him? How quickly would she adjust to her new father figure? Jonathan adjusted fairly well, right away, and of course we know Carolyn did!

So I guess as writers and producers, they did the right thing. Too many questions for 24 minutes of script. But if you treat the whole predicament as "real" vs. just a TV show, there are some holes in the whole idea.

I used to write fan fic and read fan fic about this show, and have seen some really good stories on both how she found out about him, and how she adjusted afterwards... one story I read suggested it happened as kind of a tag to The Music Maker - the last show of the first season. In that one, Candy finally puts it together and corners her mother right after Tim Seagirt leaves. In another, she and Jonathan are fishing on the beach during summer vacation and she corners Jonathan on the subject, and in still another, she is accidentally left alone during a thunderstorm at Gull Cottage, and the Captain finally appears and comforts her.

Sometimes I wish that there had been an episode about it, but sometimes I am glad there wasn't because it opens the door to so many other possibilities!

Thanks Ghostfan, I think they missed out on some good storylines there, I particularly like the thunderstorm suggestion, it was used to good effect in the Ernest Borgnine film A Grandpa for Christmas.

Thanks. Actually, I wrote the thunderstorm one back in around 2004 or so. I've never heard of Grandpa for Christmas... or seen it. Guess no idea is original! :-)

I called my story, The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship. I think it is still up on Fan-Fiction.net.

That was 3 years earlier, GpFC didn't come out till 2007 and it was a different plot but they did use a thunderstorm to bring an estranged kid and her Grandpa together. Thanks for the info anyway.

I love that story! Thanks!

Why, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Blushes... unless you are talking about Grandpa...
