Smoking

A couple days ago, I think the episode was 'The Color TV Bandit', Malloy is talking to Reed in the breakroom at the end and holding a lit cigarette. Now, this cigarette never got anywhere close to his face, but I was wondering if he'd been shown as a smoker in any other episodes.

In "It All Happened So Fast" (also first season) it appears Pete is smoking in the interrogation room as he and Jim are awaiting the detectives. Again, he's not shown puffing away but the coil of smoke is unmistakable.

I just rewatched this episode tonight (one of my favorites from any season) and I watched specifically for the smoking since I didn't remember seeing that before. Pete wasn't smoking in the episode, as far as I could tell. There are ashtrays on the table when they walk in, but they are never used. Pete does play with a cup of water for a while, but no smoking. They are only in the interrogation room waiting for the detectives for a minute or so with Mac and once the questioning starts he never lights up. I could have missed it though.

I just finished watching "It all happened so fast" and I saw the smoke but I'm pretty sure it was from Pete's coffee. I could be wrong seeing how I watched it on my iphone though!

"Why Don't We Do It In The Road"?

badge7213 is correct, and we see Malloy with cigarettes a number of times. (Well, at least these two, anyway.) And of course Marty himself was a regular smoker, and even did a spiel for some brand of cigarettes during his Route 66 days. But I've heard--can't remember where, so can't confirm--that he didn't want to be seen on screen actually smoking (i.e., puffing) so that might be why it was filmed as it was.

(Watching these "oldies" shows, it's amazing to see how often, and when, and where people smoked on TV: elevators, hospitals, airplanes, etc. And seemingly everyone did it. I'm amazed that neither of my parents smoked, since it was just so ordinary back in the '50s, '60s, and into the '70s.)

The only smoker I remember is Karen Black, when she played a lady who fell for Pete, but he couldn't date her because he met her on the job.

On all of the older shows, you see occasional smoking. Raymond Burr, Jack Webb, William Hopper, and many more all smoked. The cigarette smoking probably happens when the actor smokes between scenes; then the director calls action and there's no reason to put the cigarette out. Also a lot of actresses do needlework to fill in the time between scenes, and depending on the scene, sometimes the actress is shown doing her needlework in the scene.

Are there any other pieces of business that actors and actresses do that is part of their personal life but get wrapped into the character that they are playing?
