Boat or no boat?

In a season 5 episode (A Fool and His Money), Malloy wins some money from a contest. Not money from his paycheck, it's extra, sort of like "found money." He wants to buy a boat with it, but practical killjoy Reed spends the whole episode trying to talk his partner into saving or investing the money instead.

Fast-forward to season 7 episode Follow Up, in which Reed is hot to buy--guess what?--a boat. And with his own hard-earned money, I might add. (I'd insert an eye-roll emoticon here, but I hate the new emoticons. Ugh!)

(Btw, there are two things in this ep that remind me of Emergency!... one is Royal Dano, who played one of the disputing horse owners; he was in two eps of E! The other is the fact that Reed floated the idea of he & Malloy co-owning the boat and renting it out on days when they're working. Any fan of Emergency! knows there was an episode in which all the guys at Station 51 were thinking of pitching in to buy a boat and, yes, rending it out on days when they're working.)

I noticed that as well about those two Adam-12 episodes. I guess that's what happens when you use the same writers, directors etc... for different shows!! Lol. I'm sure the writers were hoping no one would notice. Or, the writers didn't care. Anyway, you know what they say about boats don't you? Bust Out Another Thousand!

I just watched that Season 5 episode yesterday; I like the twist at the end in which Malloy buys Reed a single share of stock. Very nice way of letting Reed know not to worry about his financial future and that he's investing his money. Several of the calls on the episode work very well with the theme as we see the plights of men who made bad decisions in their lives, bottoming out with the winos.

I guess in the end Malloy never found a suitable boat to buy as he's willing to go partners with Reed on a boat in Season 7. And Reed's investments must by paying off by then as not only is he looking to buy a boat, but he now owns a vintage Corvette!

Of course, when the show was made, he probably had to pay a whole $900.00 for the 'vette. In the summer of 1977, I had my car ('57 Chevy) painted by a guy with an independently owned body shop. In the alley behind the shop sat a '61 Corvette, complete and running, for $1200.00. It sat there through the whole summer with no takers.

Good point, but don't forget Reed is on a cop's salary, Jeanne is still a stay at home wife and mother, so Jim is supporting wife and child on his cop salary, and presumably on investments and the like so he must have some spare money around for the Corvette and the boat in Season 7.
