What Kind of car did Pete get?

1974 episode "Krash" - Pete's new car. I always thought it was an AMC Javelin but googling images shows thats not it. Anyone know?

I remember that episode; I think that it was a Matador.

Thanks, ScotchRox. I'm familiar with a lot of older models, but didn't recall seeing that one before.

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.

reply

I respectfully disagree - I think it is a Matador Coupe model that was introduced in '74.

See the Wikipedia page for possible confirmation.

I concour. It was a Yellow 2 Door Matadour Hardtop.

It's was a Matador coupe. Earlier episodes showed Pete driving a blue '69 Mustang convertible. Theoretically he traded one of the coolest cars ever for one of the ugliest.

reply

Yep, AMC made both a 4 door Matador Sedan and also that ungainly 2 door Matador coupe. Funny that part of the storyline included the many problems that Malloy was having with that car, especially since (I think) AMC was a sponcer of the show.

reply

Funny, in that episode Pete tells Jim the new car should get around 15 mpg. My '01 1/2 pickup truck gets that!

reply

In the early '70s, a gallon of gas was in the 30 to 40 cent range, so fuel mileage wasn't a big concern....that is, until the first Arab Oil Embargo.

AMC had one of the worst ad campaigns for that car:

First guy: what is that thing?

Proud Owner: it's a Matador

FG: a whatador?

PO: not a whatador....a Matador

More people show up...a Whatador?

......and on and on ad nauseum

And this was the genius of AMC and why they got eaten by Chrysler, who got eaten by Daimler/Benz and now Fiat

As I shouted at my screen at age 8 "no way Pete's buying that pile of junk"! You'd be surprised how many neighbors traded in really cool cars from the 60's for some similar garbage in the '70's....it was insane.

What kind of mileage does the other 1/2 get? 

I remember in auto shop in that decade that the acronym had several meanings depending upon your love or hate of the brand:
Hate:
Found
On
Road
Dead

*beep*
Old
Rebuilt
Dodge

Love:
First
On
Race
Day

Ford family too actually survived a rear ended collision in my brothers 1972 Pinto (10-15 mph crash) me in backseat. No bang or fire but a nice crease from a Pontiac Bonneville ---^--- grill.

Now have our 8th and 9th Hondas Ridgeline and CRV

Miata has one of the best shifters I ever drove..can never forget that about that car...I had a '95 and it was a scream to cruise a curvy road or dodge traffic. Semis scared the s*** out of me though so I'd always stay away from them wasn't sure they could see me. But that notchy shifter with the flick-of-the-wrist throw was just the bomb!

Traded it for Acura Integra GSR in 1998 and that was another Yippeee! Experience...145mph on the Ohio turnpike...after a really expensive speeding ticket I decided on a sensible non flashy Accord...and drive slower since we got the kids. Now a cars a cars a car but those two were special.

The AMC Matador was one of the ugliest cars ever! There's a reason why you don't see them at any car shows, at that's it!

There's no way a bachelor in the 70's would switch from a Mustang to a Matador! Malloy could kiss his dating life goodbye at that point. At least he didn't opt for the AMC Pacer...my neighbor bought one of those in the Levi edition. Horrible.
