LOL! Well, it's fun to look for such subtext, such as when Malloy occasionally has a sour look on his face when Reed talks about Jean. And there are times when the guys bicker like a married couple, especially in episodes like Vice Versa when Reed got drive the car and Malloy wasn't at all happy to be on the passenger side. But in the end, no, they weren't on the DL and in love with each other.
But in the 80s didn't McCord and Millner re team for some show on a cable channel (as different characters) in which the episode (a cop/detective show) ends with them singing a love song to each other at a karaoke bar? I think McCord wrote that episode so if my recollection is correct, then the guys knew there was always some chatter about the Malloy/Reed partnership and decided to have fun with it in this re-teaming.
Yes, you're thinking of a TV movie called Nashville Beat. It aired on the old Nashville Network (which is now Spike TV, of all things). You're right that Kent McCord wrote (or maybe co-wrote?) the movie. And the main similarity to the show was that both main characters had been cops in LA. But at some point Milner's character moved to Nashville & worked for their PD, while McCord's character still lived in LA. Milner's character was married and lived on a ranch-type of place, but I think it might have been a late marriage for him, and she'd been married before, I'm not sure. Kent's character's wife had died not too long ago and he had at least one child, a teenager (but I don't think it was a boy named Jimmy, lol). The funny part was that even though Kent wrote the movie, his character still didn't get to drive.
But no, it doesn't end with them singing a love song to each other in a karaoke bar. (Altho if fanfic people had their way, it might have.) They and their friends went to a country bar (of course), and I think Milner knew the owner and/or the house-band, and they were "invited" to go up on stage to sing something or other. Oh, and since Kent did write the movie,there was at least one female character--maybe two--who obviously had eyes for him.
Not sure if the movie was a backdoor pilot, but if so, it obviously didn't get picked up. The theme and some of the other music in it was done by Mike Post, who's done themes for Law & Order, Magnum P.I., LA Law, Greatest American Hero, and a dozen other shows.
This movie is rarely, if ever, shown on TV and I don't believe is available on DVD, either. Not sure why, I wonder if it's because of music rights. It features a singer you might have heard of, and the movie came out just as he was exploding onto the scene--Garth Brooks.

Diagnosis Murder in the 90's used former TV stars in different roles. For example, Fred Dryer who played Hunter, a popular TV cop show from the 80's was the LAPD police chief in three episodes. Millner & McCord were in one episode as detectives Halloran and Stang. The police Captain in that 1997 episode was Policewoman Angie Dickinson, and James Darren (Corrigan from T.J. Hooker) played a city councilman.
The topic BTW is a dumb question. People that work closely together over time in dangerous or life and death situations form a long-lasting bond- check out the excellent Band of Brothers. This does not make them closet homosexuals.
