Zip ties

About 10 or so years ago, I remember there were some news stories about how police were starting to use zip ties as a replacements for handcuffs. Today CoziTV was playing the season 7 episode 'Suicide' and there was a scene where Malloy and Reed (and an old lady) took down a group of 5 guys who were stripping a parked car. After each of their regular pairs of handcuffs are used, Malloy gets to the third guy and pulls out a zip tie. This is 1975, around 30 years before the media was acting like it was a new idea.

Nice post. I saw the same episode a few days ago and saw the same scene. What I did notice is I believe he pulled the zip ties from his hat which struck me as strange that he would keep them under or in his hat.

Yup you're right 4dbirds, Malloy takes the zip ties from his hat. What an odd place to carry them. I live in the northeast and we call them cable ties.

reply

Some us Northeasterners call them zip ties too

reply

I call them 'hoobity-doobities'.

...I'm the only one.

My dad told me in the early '70s when was working for Western Union he would have to work on the teletype systems used by the Illinois State Police at their various posts.
Western Union had just started using zip ties. One day he and a co-worker were screwing around and used them as handcuffs.
Supposedly one of the troopers saw them, and thought the zip ties were a great idea. My dad gave him a few to use and check out.
Thus, as his story goes my dad introduce zip ties to the law enforcement community!
It might be a tall tale, but I like to think it might be true.
I work in law enforcement now and we call them flex cuffs.
