these corny westerns were out of date by 1967.
a waste of a good cast.
shareI actually love this movie, it's SO ridiculous it goes beyond corn and well into Camp! Seriously, I have laughed until my abs hurt at Kirk Douglas's biggest dramatic scene, this is a movie that needs to be more appreciated by the snarky bitches of the Internet!
I can't imagine what people thought of this overheated melodrama in 1967, when the ultra-stylish Mods were just starting to give way to Hippie culture, and everyone aspired to be young and cool. Maybe that's why Mitchum spends the whole movie looking like he's trying not to laugh or wince, like maybe he's keeping few bottles in his saddlebags to help him get through the long days of putting up with Kirk Douglas.
This "The Way West" the documentary by Ken Burns' brother Ric Burns is f! amazing. An objective unvarnished, unromanticized history of the settling of the American west.
