The Novel?

Has anyone read the novel? I understand that it was a pulitzer prize winner. I found an old hardback in my dead aunt's things and wondered if it was worth the read. I know the movie isn't that great, but I sorta liked it.

I read Guthrie's "The Big Sky" some years ago (also made into a movie), and my memory was that it wasn't remotely this bad. "The Way West" comes off mostly as wagon-train soap opera, with a couple of good moments. Hardly a great film.
