What was the point of trying to beat the cattle train?

At the first river crossing, Douglas got everyone racing to be the first across the river.

I didn't understand it. Can someone explain it?

I remember that Tadlock mentions he doesn't want to ride in the dust raised by a convoy that would be ahead of him.

The point, I think, is that a large cattle train moving directly ahead will deplete the resources available for the Tadlock's party.

"Duck, I says..."

Seems like it was an acceptable issue but a couple of lines to explain it better would have been nice. Made me think it was just an ego thing.
