For those of you who have seen both Wait Until Dark and Carrie, which scene did you like best:

(A) Alan Arkin leaping with the knife, or

(B) The hand of Sissy Spacek stabbing up from the grave?

My vote: (A) Alan Arkin in Wait Until Dark

I totally enjoyed both, and went to both pictures again so as to enjoy the crowd reaction that I knew was about to happen. Both films elicit a collective scream from the audiences.

My vote goes to Wait Until Dark

reply

I'm not sure.

Both are awesome.

Being younger when I first saw Carrie than when I saw Wait Until Dark, I'd have to go with Carrie!

But if I was in an audience in 1967, guess it would have made me jump out of my seat.

reply

I actually jumped at the Wait Until Dark. I knew something was going to happen in Carrie. Even though I am a DePalma fan, my vote goes to Wait Until Dark.

My vote goes with (A) Wait Until Dark.

I love both movies and Carrie is one of my ALL TIME FAVS, but Arkin jumping out like that really took me by surprise!

I would love to see both movies on the B-I-G screen!

My vote goes to Wait Until Dark. Mybe I'm a little biased because I knew something was going to happen in Carrie...so...
I loved Carrie and I think its one of the greatest horror and drama movies ever. I like Wait Until Dark because it has such a large build up and even WITH the jump scene, its still not a release because of what happens after that!
Also, am I the only one who thinks that Sissy Spacek's hand comes out very slowly, I mean the rocks move and it goes very slowly after that... I still love Carrie though...

"Wait Until Dark" for the reasons above, but also:

I saw it in full-house theater on first run, and with "Wait Until Dark" the audience was TOTALLY INTO the story. They cheered and applauded and leapt to their feet when Hepburn stabbed Arkin and he fell onto the floor with the knife in his stomach(weird: there is a freeze frame to suggest that he is "dead")...

...so they went berserk when he leaped at her and they kept screaming as he grabbed her ankle and crawled towards her.

Whereas the "Carrie" scare seemed a bit "tacked on"...a dreamy sequence(that became revealed as a literal dream sequence...Amy wasn't in any real danger at all.)

I jumped the first time I saw it, but on repeated viewings, I have to agree that it doesn't seem as sudden when you know that it's coming. (Like you said, the rock moves a little bit beforehand.)

reply

Well I was pretty sure something was going to happen in Carrie but still I jumped - and I still jump everytime I see it now!

reply

I definately jumped at the WUD scene. I usually dont these days but yeah that one had me haha.

"I am just curious as to why it's so often given credit for basically being the originator of the "shock ending"? Or at least it seems to be given this credit by many people."

I saw Carrie four (4!) times in the theater when it was released, and that scene made everyone scream and jump out of their seats.

Maybe they hadn't seen Wait Until Dark? After all, even though that film had been made almost a decade before...it was still almost a decade before.

Nobody noticed the slow 'rocks move' then. All they saw was Carrie's hand jump out and that scared the pants off of them.

Why pit Mr Arkin against what is one of the worst scenes in Carrie? That´s not fair.

Wait Until Dark's bug jump scene was pretty good, but the jump scene to end all jump scenes is- The scene at the lake at the end of the first, original "Friday the 13th". You know, when she is in the boat....I know it's coming, but it still gets me every time.
