It was established earlier on that of the six tenants living in the building, only Susy and Gloria were actually home - Shatner left for Vermont, Gloria's mother was uptown "for a weekend of fun and games" and her father had left as well, and, well, we all know where Sam had been sent.
He had the wrong dreams. All, all wrong.
He never knew who he was.
Shatner wasn't in this movie.

shareYes, the film, while exciting and well-acted, is loaded with holes. Aside from the ones already mentioned, it's glaringly preposterous that the New York streets are completely devoid of people or traffic.
