what parents allow 14-15 year kid to wait at a bus stand all night long?

first of all a stupid movie at least by today's standards. lot of stupid goofs in plot. when Audrey has realized that 3 strange and possibly dangerous men are trying to con her why she did not immediately called the police or sought help from her neighbors or just told Gloria to get Gloria's parents.
What kind of parents allow a young kid like Gloria to wait at a bus stand all night long for mr. hendrix as per the orders of Susy.

reply

First of all, huh? I thought Gloria was about 10.

Second of all, did you even watch the movie? She don't come from a Father KNows Best scenario, her father ran away, her mother went after him and they left Gloria home alone, which in the 60's was not a crime to go away for a day and leave your kid by themselves if they were old enough to look after themselves.

Also, exactly HOW is Susy supposed to notify the police about what's going on when the men she thought WERE the police were revealed to be more criminals in on the take? Add to the fact that she couldn't call for help because they had wrapped the phone cord around the banister, and she had no way of knowing where any of the three men would be should she try to leave the apartment.

Putting yourself in a blind person's position in which the phone has been disconnected, the people you believed TO be policemen are criminals, and your spouse's life is at stake and the only way to make sure they're allright is to send the only neighbor at home to go look for them, exactly what WOULD you do?

neeraj-14.....you must be 14. she was all confused because she didn't know WHAT to believe. she didn't know all 3 men were bad guys.
my only question is why didn't she just give them the doll, but then agian i guess she was just so confused by the bs story she thought it would get her husband.

The worst day is the one in which we have not laughed.

reply

She was the only one who knew where the doll was, as long as they needed it there was reason to keep her alive to avoid making an even bigger mess of things than they already were and maybe drawing in attention from other people.

reply

1. Gloria's parents were gone, so there was no one there to tell her that she wasn't allowed to do anything.

2. She thinks that the police want to arrest her husband, and when she figures it out, she called someone she trusts. By the time she could call the police, her phone lines have already been severed.

reply

And anyway, you must not be very old, because if you actually had been alive when this movie came out, you would know how much safer it was back then.

neeraj-14 - wow, you really need to watch more old movies. No, "WUD" is not a perfect movie. But it is head & shoulders above the garbage that they put out today.

When this movie was made, the assumption was that people could follow a coherent plot. Gloria is able to go to the bus stop because her parents have left her alone - this is mentioned in the movie.

And what is Audrey supposed to tell the police? Some men came by her apartment, claiming they knew her husband in the War? How is this something for the police?

And the phone cord - it wasn't just wrapped around the banister, Roat cut the phone cord - so now how is she supposed to call the cops?

Did you even watch the movie?

A stupid movie by today's standards ? What a ludicrous statement. Those weren't goofs in the plot. It's apparent that you either didn't watch the film closely or your attention span just couldn't handle it. Today's standards are incredibly lower than back when this film was made. It is a very well-done film and it doesn't have a 7.9 rating for nothing. I don't know how old you are but maybe you should study the art of film a bit more and learn to recognize good cinema instead of making ill-conceived statements.

Oh my god Ryan your such a loser. Do you think your the only person in the world to go to film school? The people who wash my car and serve me my dinner all went to film school.

Oh yeah and some people in the world are capable of forming opinions based on their own natural intelligence without having to take courses just to understand the basic concept.

I have spoken, so it is law!!!

reply

Attack much?

Film school ?

You don't need to go to film school to study the art of the film.

If you had any natural intelligence, then you would understand the DIFFERENCE between opinions and fact.

"I only hear you too, Sidney."

reply

Oh but I do know the difference Ryan. Opinions are what other people have, facts are what I speak.

This is a fact and if you don't agree then that is just your opinion, you see? Either way I win.

I'm awesome!!!

You haven't spoken a single fact in any of your responses to me. When you do, make sure you use legitimate references and proper MLA citations. If you can't do that, then it is merely opinion - NOT fact.

reply

References and citations? I can decide whether something is fact for myself thanks very much.

I actually feel bad for making you look stupid all the time as it's becoming obvious to me that my intelligence is a gift and it's not your fault that you weren't born with much. That being said though you do have a really snotty tone like you think your better than other people which maybe hypocritical coming from me but at least I have much more of a case than you.

What's also obvious is that you cannot think for yourself, you absorb view points from people you judge to be an authority on the matter, take the perfect stranger argument, you only changed your mind and admitted I was right after you researched film writing, so you read someone elses opinion on how it's done and like the programmable muppet you are you completely changed your perception of it. I on the other hand judged it by myself and there is not one person in the world that can make me change my view because it is my view, I formed it entirely by myself so it's set in stone.

Again though I appreciate that it's not your fault that you were born without the ability to form your own view points and I don't mean to rub it in but dude, it's awesome, your missing out!

reply

Oh, grow up!
You are making yourself look stupid.
There is no need to go to film school to know a lot about films, and let's face it - the only people who really go to film school are the ones who don't have the willpower/diligence/potential to succeed in any other faculty.
By the way, the comment "I have spoken, so it is law!" emphasises the fact you believe yourself to be above others (which is very arrogant indeed). So don't go calling other people arrogant unless you change.
Thank goodness we live in a democracy and idiots like you are nipped in the bud, thus preventing them from turning their aspirations into an absolutist regime.

reply

Pipe down Treacle, men are talking, why don't you make yourself useful and go make me a cup of tea.

P.s. I'm not the one that went to film school and in fact made the same point you did, oh dear, how embarrassing for you.

From the nature of many posts, the 14-15 year olds are busy slamming movies they may or may not have seen, on imdb...

For starters, Susy does not realize the true nature of the danger she's in until very late in the story; the three villains are master manipulators who have aroused a suspicion here and there, but it isn't until she hears Gloria's secret code on the telephone (two rings and then hang up) that she realizes she is surrounded by men who are not who they claim to be and who want that doll so badly they will kill for it. Again, this moment comes VERY late in the movie; she does not spend an hour and a half KNOWING what is going on.

As for the kid running around the streets at night, it is explained early on that the father is not in the picture and the mother neglects her; it is not so difficult to see how a child like that could become quite self-sufficient, especially in New York.

Never mess with a middle-aged, Bipolar queen with AIDS and an attitude problem!
