What'd the two ex-cons go to prison for?

I didn't really catch why Tallman and Carlino went to prison, or what they did before hand that made them criminal... Thanks.

They were playing the badger game, although they did not refer to it by that name. Essentially, a woman lures a man to her room, and then when they have reached a compromising position, another man bursts into the room, pretending to be an outraged brother or father. The mark ends up giving him money to pacify him. As a variation, the man who enters the room might say he is with the vice squad, and then allows the mark to bribe him.

Obviously, Lisa would be the woman, and Talman and Carlino would play role of family members or vice detectives.
