"The Exorcist", "1984", "Seconds" and "Psycho" were almost identical to their novels. These are also four of the finest films I've ever seen.

Has a best-selling trash novel ever been made into a good movie? Or even more unlikely, has a popular trash novel ever been transferred to the screen without significant alteration, and been either good or popular?
